Welcome,
I'm sure most people will be willing to answer any questions you have.

Have you already published any books or articles? If so, what were they?

Just keep out of the Politics and Religion forum and you'll be fine.

Welcome to collarme.

PDX -

That hasn't been my experience on the forums.

To the OP, Novelist:

There are several writers who are also long time posters. I have had the good fortune to have conversation with a few posters about things I've written, and they have PRIVATELY been very accomodating. HOWEVER, I'm a known entity round these parts. Most of the people on the forums have very clearly stated in the past that they actually don't take kindly to Joe Schmoe coming in and asking intimate or personal questions. They don't know you from a can of paint, so with that caveat, good luck.

I'm sure that if you join in the discussions or merely read them, there will be a certain amount of info you will gather. If you just come in and ask inane questions, don't be surprised if your bollocks are handed to you.

This is not to deter you, just to give you my personal experience of the lay of the land, in a comradery sort of manner.

Best wishes, and
Welcome,
sunshine

Yeah, I thought about that more after I posted it and came back to edit it but. . . . . . . to late. lol!
He's about to enter the lions den.

Let me rephrase - better to read the forums, learn who won't tear your liver out for poking your nose in to their business without being in the lifestyle yourself - then ask them if you can ask them questions privately. Posting to an open forum, even if you were in the lifestyle, invites the lions to gnaw upon your bones and they are a hungry, vicious bunch that show no mercy even as your squeals of pain echo through their dungeon halls.

Good luck with keeping your liver!

We've all had 'em. Some of us might even have a scar or two.

Novelist - I hope you see the good naturedness of all this.

It is usually recommended to write what you know. Writing about stuff you do not understand or relate to is a set-up for failure. And asking prurient questions is not recommended. We're not interested in providing wank fodder for you or your intended audience. Nobody likes feeling like an animal at the zoo, being gawked at by the tourists.

Because George Lucas knew all about swordfights in space.

No, but George Lucas knew a whole lot about good versus evil, traditional western stories (which let's face it - that's what Star Wars is)... a little this and that about other philosophies, and a whole lot about computers. Heck he even learned about how animals move so that the creatures that he created moved naturally (sunshine has an exboyfriend who works for ILM).

Something Steven Spielberg was told when he said he didn't feel he was the right person to direct The Color Purple - and have you been up in space? What made you good enough to direct ET?

While it is true that we need to KNOW A GOOD BIT about our topic. There are certain ideals that are absolutes - we even have words for them like... fundamental truths, archetypes, common emotions, etc. I don't think it's necessary to know 100% about your topic - no writer knows 100% about their topic. As a woman, I can't possibly know what it feels like to be a man, but I sure can observe them, read studies about how they interact, run my ideas by other men, etc. That is what research is. You show me a writer who does NO research, I'll show you someone who writes crap.

best,
sunshine
