DEMOCRATIC UPSET - New York Special Election: Medicare Will Be Issue Of 2012

WASHINGTON -- The 2012 election found its defining issue on Tuesday night, with an insurgent Democrat upsetting a well-financed Republican in a deeply red district in New York state.

The GOP paved the way for the Democrat’s victory by voting earlier this year to end the current Medicare program that guarantees health coverage to seniors and replace it with a voucher system that provides premium support for the elderly to purchase private health insurance.

The Republican in the race, Jane Corwin, fully endorsed the GOP plan to alter Medicare, while the Democrat, Kathy Hochul, defended the social safety net. The race's polling trends point to Medicare as the defining issue, while the conversation has played out on a national level. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) summed up the Democratic position: “We have a plan –- it’s called Medicare.”

I saw it earlier tonight, and am very happy, that the outrageous tea party message is coming through as ridiculous. OkAY, I would prefer an 80 yo, die before a 20yo, but have never been comfortable with healthcare for profit thinguie, as the starting point. M

Utter stupidity, but according to the story the GOP is not alone...

With some exceptions, Democrats have ranged from reluctant defenders of government spending to outright hawkish assailants of social funds.

Let's hope they all get the message.

I saw this coming since Didi got fucked over in NY-23 a couple of years ago.

If the teabagger games the primary and is running by themselves, the moderates bail on crazy and vote Democrat. If the teabagger candidate is in the general election ( NY has a distinct 'Conservative' party -- long story ) , he splits the crazies off the moderate Republican vote, and then they BOTH lose to the Democrat.

Now that they have set themselves up along this ideological purity of destroying medicare-as-we-know-it with direct payments up front from the government to insurance companies in the form of vouchers and care-rationing there's the added issue of F-News' core audience (cranky old people) not listening to them anymore and voting their own self-interest.

Upset, Hardly. Democrats have been in control of New York forever. A republican win there would have been an upset.

Musicmystery -> RE: DEMOCRATIC UPSET - New York Special Election: Medicare Will Be Issue Of 2012 (5/25/2011 5:53:23 AM)

Depends on the district, servant. Rural NY is staunchly Republican, and upstate is more Republican than NYC/Long Island Democrats.

You really need to check your history. NY-23 was held by the Republicans SINCE THE CIVIL WAR. It's in UP-state, and it's a good representation of what national moderates feel.

The teabaggers are costing elections and congressional seats. There is now one less Republican in the US House of Representatives.

Keep up the good work, teabaggers!

Marc2b -> RE: DEMOCRATIC UPSET - New York Special Election: Medicare Will Be Issue Of 2012 (5/25/2011 7:41:46 AM)

There is nothing deeply red about my district. Because it encompases some pretty rural areas it does have a slight edge toward the Republicans but there are enough urbanites to offset that. It is a swing district if ever there was one. I can also report that many people wanted to vote Repiblican but didn't for one simple reason... Corwin is a nut job who lost some of the nut job vote to an even bigger nut job... Davis.

This was and is a staunchly repub district for years. I know, they were and have been completey fooled but that's another post. The repub was a heavy favorite and should have easily won.

Funny thing happened on the way to the polls. Policies that most, not all but most repubs have supported of course...when the time comes for such pandering were all-of-a-sudden...in play because of the ignorant, schizophrenic, political kink of the Tv-Partiers. Thanx to them for all of their help.

The medicare discussion is going to be a huge issue.

lovmuffin -> RE: DEMOCRATIC UPSET - New York Special Election: Medicare Will Be Issue Of 2012 (5/25/2011 9:57:53 AM)

What is not being mentioned here on this thread is that the Tea party candidate is a fraud. He is likely a democratic operative who the democrats got to create a tea party line in order to siphon off votes from republicans (who will think this tea party candidate represents the tea party) when all he represents is a FRAUD and stolen votes.

First of all, she is not calling Ryan's plan a reform plan, she is calling it a "kill medicare plan" (and has repeated this 100 times in a short period). And second, she is lying about what Ryan's plan is about. Then, she names the three candidates, without explaining what the democrats have done, their dirty tricks, in order to try to steal the election. This election only proves the the democrats are manipulative sneaky bastards.  Nicely done though.

Yeah, you mentioned it, and it is about as ignorant a notion as if it was on a rabid right wing blogsite.

Oh....it is.

lovmuffin -> RE: DEMOCRATIC UPSET - New York Special Election: Medicare Will Be Issue Of 2012 (5/25/2011 10:31:03 AM)

Even Rush talked about it earlier in his program today. That in and of itself gives it credibility, right wing or not.

lovmuffin -> RE: DEMOCRATIC UPSET - New York Special Election: Medicare Will Be Issue Of 2012 (5/25/2011 10:33:40 AM)

Not saying for sure he was a dem operative but certainly is a wack job representing himself as tea party when in fact he is not

Thats the same thing all you guys say when in fact you don't even listen other than the crap some one else says. I don't blame you though. If some one was out there proving every day that things I fundamentally believed all my life were in fact false then I would expect some to be screaming liar and asswipe ect.

Rush is right 98.6 percent of the time.

We ditto heads know this because he says so.

Here is a minor demonstration of why he lacks a credibility, (note that this was on the date that the issue was resolved) and his drawing people of like credibility parrotting him is not something that anyone possessing facts or reason and logic would gravitate towards.  Laughable idiot is all he is.
