Big Surprise I know but its now official  [8|][8|][8|]
Democratic-led Senate Votes Down Ryan Budget
The Senate on Wednesday voted down House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan’s controversial budget blueprint, 57 to 40, in a Democratic effort to win advantage in continuing deficit talks and in the 2012 election season. The vote marked an effort by Democrats to exploit public opposition to the Wisconsin Republican’s plan to shift Medicare to a subsidy system. A special election in New York’s 26th Congressional District on Tuesday, won by a Democratic underdog, became something of a referendum on the Ryan plan, and Democrats see opposition to it as a potent political weapon in 2012.

You actually expected something different to happen?

It really looks like it is going to be a case of gridlock since neither side is willing to compromise on this.

I thought my first comment *Big Surprise I know but its now official* would have made you realise it wasnt a surprise
here let me fix that.
Is Ryan not running for the senate becasue he is gonna try for a run for Nomination in 2012?
If all they can do is gridlock, they are about as useful as a chocolate fireguard

jlf1961 -> RE: Democratic-led Senate Votes Down Ryan Budget (5/25/2011 4:45:42 PM)

In case you didn't notice during the election, many republicans running for congress made claims that they would not support changes in social security and medicare, and as soon as they got in the house, they did exactly that.

This gives democrats plenty of ammunition for the next election cycle, if they grow a pair and use it.

The republicans fail to realize that the baby boomers are hitting retirement age, and a large percentage of those boomers have no retirement or medical coverage, since insurance carriers do not want to cover the elderly.

Its been obvious for many years. Looking in from the outside anyway.
Far too many suffer from the "fuck you jack Ive got mine"
thats what made me so indignant about the teaparty.
where were they when all this reckless spending was going on
but now because it affects them they are DEMANDING to change things around, yet STILL cut from the poorest and least able to fend for themselves.

TheCabal -> RE: Democratic-led Senate Votes Down Ryan Budget (5/25/2011 5:18:06 PM)

Great.  Now maybe they can get around to producing a budget of their own, so an actual discussion can be had, rather than just pretending the government doesn't need any budget at all.

You've got your parties backwards.  The GOP put up the Ryan plan.  The 'Crats have put up nothing - they have literally offered the voters a choice between something they've been lying about and demonizing, and NOTHING AT ALL.  The only reason the US government is operating at all right now is because the GOP put together a spending plan.

Speaking of the party of NO, there was NO budget at all for FY 2011 until the GOP took back the House, even though the 'Crats previously controlled the House, Senate and Presidency.

The Senate hasn't passed ANY budget in over 18 months - even one of it's own design.  Now that's impotence and irresponsibility.

What the news fails to realize, or refuses to report , is that anyone over 55 is exempt from the changes.   The cutoff point before that can be negotiated.   The alternative is for the system to run out of money or to double medicare taxes, both also take their main toll on the poor.

The Democrats did offer a budget.

The Senate cannot pass a budget unless it is first passed in the House, its a rule in this quaint document called the US CONSTITUTION.

Its really up to the House to make a REALISTIC plan, not a FANTASY plan. The longer the Republican controlled House screws around, the more they'll look like fools for not doing anything. The plan might include budget cuts, but to be realistic, would need to raise taxes. If the Bush Era Tax Cuts had expired like they should have (would have been wiser not to put them in place in the first place), the budget gap would be about $200-400 Billion. Since it didn't, the budget gap is $1.3 Trillion and climbing. This is one of those games, in which the Republicans can't blame the Democrats for failure to deliver a realistic bill. If they dont understand the plan has to be signed off by the Democratic controll Senate AND the Democratic President......their idiots. Come election day, they'll get quite a few angry people voting them out of office.

BTW (and not to de-rail this fine discussion), where *IS* the Jobs bill the Republicans promised on the campaign trail in 2010? Nearly six months and not a single bill in sight.

The Republicans were blocking jobs bills Democrats DID write to end tax breaks for outsourcing and offer incentives to bring jobs back to the US. They were too busy voting NO NO NO to write any jobs bills.

It was widely reported.

Under Ryan's proposal, Medicare would remain unchanged for those 55 or older, including the millions who now receive health care under the program. Anyone younger would be required to obtain coverage from a private insurer, with the government providing a subsidy to cover part of the cost of premiums.

Ryan Medicare plan would affect those under age 55 Ryan’s redesign of Medicare, with federally subsidized premiums for private insurance,

But that's just it the House DID pass a budget.  The Senate OFTEN doesn't like what is in the House budget, and puts together their own proposal.  Then the two go to what's called a "conference committee" and sort out differences.  But in order to do that, the Senate needs to have a proposal, and they do not.

Oh, you mean like the proposed White House budget - the one Obama's team wrote - that the Senate rejected unanimously?
