Soon Memorial Day will be upon us and I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank all the men & women of the armed forces for their service to our country.  It doesn't matter when you served or if you're even still serving, you are a blessing to this county & we wouldn't be here if not for you.

On a more personal note, I only know a couple of young men in the service at this time. One will be deployed (again) next week & one lost his life just a few short years ago at the age of 19.  I honestly never met the one who lost his life but I had the recent pleasure of running in his honor in the Marine Corp Marathon alongside his family & friends.  His parents made up t-shirts for us to wear honoring their son & I felt honored to have been a part of it all.

Is there someone you'll be honoring on Memorial Day?  Please share with us your story on this thread.

i miss him so much.

my father's father, that neither of us ever met, was killed in the Korean War.

Even though my Grandfather fought in WWI, my Father fought in WWII, my Uncle was stationed in Korea, but after the war there, & I was married to a Marine during Viet Nam, I was raised to be a pacifist. I honor the men & women who have fought for their country, but work toward peaceful resolutions to conflicts so that someday no more will have to lose their lives or be haunted forever by the killing of others.

My daughter's on again/off again boyfriend and constant good friend will be deployed in June. We're all worried about him.

Feline, can you offer suggestions for stuff to send him? I don't know what they would want, and what travels well, and what handles the temperatures.

Just a thought for the weekend and what it means.

A veteran is someone who, at one point in his/her life wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America' for an amount of 'up to and including my life.'

That is Honor

My cousin's son was a Marine and was KIA in Afghanistan on Jan 10, 2010. He was 20. I should be used to the feeling of loss by now but I'm not.

I'll be honoring "my" Herobox soldier, who is currently deployed in Iraq.

If you don't personally know someone serving, but want to do something great for a soldier, you can sponsor one at www.herobox.org

This is a fantastic link. And you don't have to make up your own box, there are many ways that you can support this effort. I'm a bit challenged financially right now, but I am bookmarking the link for when I have some extra.

Thanks Greedy, the empty feeling knowing that my cousin's son is gone is especially bad tonight knowing my oldest son is off on his first mission as a Green Beret. I never sleep well when the boy is off doing his thing and thinking about Jake makes it a bit worse, but I salute all those men and women in our armed forces that protect us past and present. It's a calling I could never take on myself - I'm grateful to those who do.

Adding my thanks to both those who currently serve and those who have served in the past. My ex is from a military family (Navy on one side, Marines on the other) and joined at 17 (delayed entry). His sister joined later and is still serving in the Navy.

On this note, I'll post a couple of links that may be of interest to our 'needles and hooks' folks. If you knit, crochet or sew, you can send 'a bit of home' to a soldier on ship/ overseas, or something truly comforting to an injured veteran:

Please keep in mind that not all veterans are American.

I'm so sorry for your family's loss. Twenty is just...it is not right to die so young. I know it's a reality, but it doesn't have to be one I readily accept.

As for getting used to the feeling of loss? It is only human to never get used to it. Heck, I still get emotional over the loss of my cat and that was 14 years ago. So it's understandable that it will take much time to get to any point where you feel you are "used" to it, if it ever does happen. The only thing I can suggest to help is to focus more on his life and what he was like in life, rather than his death.

I can understand too about how you are feeling with regard to your son. I wish him well.
