saw them all..2001 does not hold the test of time...long drawn out scenes, thinking that special effects would make up for lack of a story line.

Hal the computer kinda rocked, though.

10. The Great Escape - I don't remember seeing it, but I looked it up and yep, I saw it. I don't remember if I liked it or not
9. The Blade Runner - didn't see it
8. Good Fellas - pretty good but too much violence for my tastes
7. Apocalypse Now - bored the crap out of me
6. This is Spinal Tap - I still can't believe I've never seen this one
5. Reservoir Dogs - It's up there on my top WORST films list.  Way too violent for me.
4. 2001 A Space Odyssey - Snooze.  Bored me.
3. Taxi Driver - I couldn't sit through the whole thing; It didn't hold my interest
2. Casablanca - Favorite film ever.  I have the DVD and can pretty much recite it as it plays.
1. The Godfather - It was ok...I'm just not into mob movies that much. The Mister owns the whole series.

As for Dave/Hal...Years ago I worked for a guy named Dave.  He was computer challenged.  I put a sound wave on his computer so any time he pressed a particular function key, there was Hal, saying "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that."

Seen all, loved all.  I am an avid movie buff and viewed all these movies several times except This is Spinal Tap which I saw only once.  I recycle their joke about turning something up to eleven now and then.  But it was like Hedwig and the Angry Inch in that I wouldn't have missed for anything but once was enough. 

The Blade Runner & Reservoir Dogs are timeless and make my play list often.

10. The Great Escape (Good) Never seen it
9. The Blade Runner (Really good) Good, but a bit overrated IMHO
8. Good Fellas (Never seen it, started to once but fell asleep) Just flat out stomper smoking. Up there with Raging Bull and Taxi Driver as Scorsese's best
7. Apocalypse Now (Good, but kind of boring) A good flick-I'm not much of a FFC guy-this feels like he set out to make an epic and almost, but not quite hit his target.
6. This is Spinal Tap (Excellent stuff, funny as hell) Shockingly, have never seen it
5. Reservoir Dogs (Superb! One of my all time favourite films) A fave-actually saw it in the theatre, which not a lot of people can say.
4. 2001 A Space Odyssey (Boring as Hell) Good on acid
3. Taxi Driver (Excellent!) Travis!
2. Casablanca (Superb film making!!) My dad's favorite flick-has more quotes than almost any movie ever
1. The Godfather (Hated it, one of the worst films ever, overly long, boring, and  inept...it just sucks - except the music). I go up and down on this one-I like 2 better than 1

And the most mis-quoted:  "Play it again, Sam" was never said in the movie.  Go figure.

10. The Great Escape - never saw it
9. The Blade Runner - saw it a million years ago. Didn't leave an impression.
8. Good Fellas LOVED IT. AND LOVED IT MORE THE 12TH TIME I SAW IT. One of my all time faves.
7. Apocalypse Now - Just throw acid in my eyes so I can stop looking at this.
6. This is Spinal Tap Didn't see it.
5. Reservoir Dogs Embarassed to say I didn't see it.
4. 2001 A Space Odyssey - Loved the psychology of it... It was fascinating.
3. Taxi Driver HATED IT.
2. Casablanca - loved it even more after seeing the documentary / news program about the making of it. I wanted so much to be French when I saw that movie.
1. The Godfather LOVED IT. MY ALL TIME NUMBER ONE FAVORITE MOVIE. THE BEST FILM EVER MADE (are you listening R?)

The timing was sublime, the acting and storyline superb. The psychology, the dialogue, the storyline - all were just glorious. I can not gush enough about this movie. The subtle nuances were amazing, and it is chock full of quote-worthy lines.

Okay, I admit it, I have never read to the end of Jude the Obscure or Of Human Bondage. Dayum those suck. I refuse to try to read to the end because I did make it through Grapes of Wrath, and it never got better.

As far as the movies go, I think that I have seen some but not others. However, they are cultural memes and so I could likely give a quote from each. For example I looked up This is Spinal Tap, because I thought that it might have been a different movie. But I think that one is named, Four Hotel Rooms, or something like that. However, I do know that the Spinal Tap amp thing goes to 11.

I know that I have seen Casablanca, because I made a point of it one day.

How many have you seen, and what did you think of them?



10 - Have never seen
9 - Have seen parts - not my cup of tea
8 - Have seen several times, not by choice. It's OK but nothing I would choose to sit down and rewatch on my own
7 - Have seen several times and liked it. Long and I have to be in the right mood, but it's pretty good.
6 - I've seen it but don't find it very funny. It's kind of like Monty Python to me. It just rarely strikes my funnybone.
5 - I own this and have watched it numerous times. Not Tarantino's best by far but better than most other people's work. Have to be in the mood for the heavy violence.
4 - Have seen parts. Not a big sci-fi fan and it's verrrry slow.
3 - Have seen it more than once and liked it.
2 - I've seen it and it's a classic but not one of my personal favorites, frankly.
1 - Just recently watched the whole thing as well as The Godfather 2. Slow but interesting. I liked them.

I would say that "Citizen Kane" is the movie most people claim to have seen but have never watched. I never have. It just doesn't look interesting...........luci

I have found that when one has the opportunity to see films & movies on the big screen, as most of them were meant to be seen, it completely changes the impact. I had seen Gone With The Wind several times on tv & ho-hum. But when I had the chance to see it in a theater there was most definitely a difference in the impact. Same with the original The Postman Always Rings Twice and Citizen Kane. When you are in the darkened theater, looking up at the images on the big screen, the experience can be completely different. I've been fortunate to have seen a lot of older films & movies in classic movie houses. My favorite is the Castro Theater in San Francisco. Original right down to the organ rising out of the floor in front of the stage. And it has an actual stage, not just an apron.

Casablanca, Spinal Tap and Reservoir Dogs - 3 movies I loved... Taxi Driver watched it and a great movie but not really my thing, but then I am not really a movie person, I much prefer the book, if people talk about latest movies, I just sit around and look fairly clueless. Now a good book, a glass of wine or single malt and some nice music, bring it on...

High on my list of most overrated movies in fact. Bogart couldnt act (one of a long list of actors who can only play themselves), and Claude Rains shouldve stuck with the Invisble Man.

Why would anyone pretend they've seen a movie they haven't?

I've not seen any movies where Charley Chaplin featured, I can just about tolerate black and white films but I can't stand silent movies. However I remember seeing part of one where a wooden house was moved and that seemed ok, then the adverts came on and they were in colour.

Oh I so agree with this sentiment. I love the big screen, and as much as I enjoy rewatching my favorites from Netflix on tv, I will always be a person who goes to the movies.

StarWars, Lord of the Rings Trilogy, and any Harry Potter film are all examples of the kind of thing I will watch first in the theater.

For the same reason people let on like they've read books they haven't or had experiences they haven't. People are sometimes misleading and/or braggarts. It's human nature sadly......luci

I've done it in semi-social situations, like when people are making chit-chat before a meeting or waiting around for a flight or something if it's pretty clear to me that by saying "Uh yeah I've seen that, heh heh," I can speed the conversation along whereas if I say "No, I've never seen that movie" my interlocutor is going to want to describe and/or act out an entire scene for me. A scene that, keep in mind, I would already be familiar with if I had any interest in seeing the movie in the first place. So it's basically a polite lie to a stranger/acquaintance so that we can both chuckle a bit and get on with our lives.

Does this work? People often want to celebrate in shared experiences so surely they'd still re-enact the scene and then others saying things like "Remember when so and so did this or said that?" In these situations you have to learn how to turn your brain off and nod.

FYI...... Apocalypse Now is on AMC at the moment....we are watching it.

Another FYI........a big ass LED HD TV with surround sound is better than theatre for me.
