It was a very common curing agent. Its still used in "pickling".

It aint grandeur, we know lye is used to preseve and to wash your ass, but we don't eat the dingleberries from it.

No lye products are used in the processing of Falls Mill's grits.

In a pinch corn, but its not even close to hominy, soaked overnite and slowcooked for 4 or 5 hours. (not 4 or 5 minutes like Quaker!)

Not me. Almost every Sunday since I could reach the stovetop my job was grits and crumbled bacon with red eye gravy. No need for all that other stuff as long as there are grits around. So youre wrong again!!!! [:D]
