Sounds a bit like a black widow cat to me or the grim reaper cat. I'm thinking the staff ran a sweepstake or a book: Who will the cat of death visit next, place your bets.

Its not the first of such articles (not even on here, once or twice such a story made the round on here before from a different cat doing that) and wont be the last. One of the theories is that the cats smell when (as far as I remember) certain cells start to die or so...

I heard of a case where an old women died and her cats started to eat her corpse.

It's like buzzards circling in the desert.
