Next door neighbours? No. Office mates? No. Partners/former partners? Friends of partners/former partners? Partners/former partners of partners/former partners? Absolutely.
It's possible to know people with alternative lifestyles without being part of a formalised 'scene'; it's what I did for several years. You might not know anyone into this but that doesn't necessarily make you 'usual'.
