My grandma believed that if you gave someone a straight-up compliment you would set the evil eye onto them. Something to do with vanity.

So every compliment would have a seriously rude arabic insult tacked on the end. Like:

Darling! My princess, you look beautiful! Cunt!

I kid you not.

I like your family much better than the Norwegians who raised me. They weren't even slightly quirky. But you know, Northern Europeans are not known for their quirkiness.

I was a Peace Corps Volunteer (What did you do in the Viet Nam War, Daddy?) and served on a Caribbean Island. The volcano started to erupt, causing evacuation of half the island. A biology teacher with a deggree, for gawd's sake gathered the volunteers around her to say, "Do not touch the lava, for it will suck out your blood. But if you do you will be okay, until a friend, he meet you with a greetin' to the shoulder, so." She demonstrated and continued, "for when he do so, you will fall to a pile of dust."

School kids had seen the drawing of the under ocean magna, connecting each island to the next. One kid said to me, "Did you hear of the man that fell into Soufriere <lava pool next island north> and he came up here in the volcano?" One of the smarter kids IMHO said "Oh no. What happened was his dog."

Actually Lance, I think that's right. Something about what is needed to digest the two - one requires the thing that cancels out the first one so that your body has to work much harder. Can someone who understand that make sense of it?

Like... if you need hot water for your whites and you need cold water for your darks, and you put them together, you just get tepid water, and it's harder to clean the clothes.

Ok, one very superstitious grandmother had me chasing my tail all the time.

Do not let your shoes have one sole up and one sole down on the floor. One of your parents will die.

Do not give a purse or wallet as a gift, without money in them, even if it is just a nickel. That is bad luck.

Do not give knives as a gift, that is bad luck. If someone gives you a knife, give them money, even if it is just a nickel. Then you have bought it from them and it is not bad luck.

Do not forget to say "God Bless You" when someone sneezes or their soul will be snatched.

Do not cross your eyes and let a fly cross your vision, you will stay cross-eyed forever.

And of course, don't go to be with a wet head or you will get a cold.

I really wish that I could remember Granny's superstition about going to bed with wet hair. All I know is it was something much more dire than waking up with a cold!!

A google search reveals many superstitions forecasting a cold, but there are also a few predicting death. I made up this ryhme, just for you, Linnaea:

A wet head to bed,

As a funny... (odd not ha ha)... One of the things I miss most is hearing "bless you" when I sneeze. It is so ingrained in me that at times I say "thank you" even when they don't bless me! I am forever blessing the folks here, and they do the confused head tilt.... every time.
