I think despite losing a lot of listeners they still have a strong following but it doesn't surprise me people are sick and tired of all the negative complaining. It is encouraging and I think very appropriate for people to be interested in objectivity and the truth. It's good for people to listen to a talk show that tries to improve life of its listeners. Hopefully these guys will get a pay cut to reflect their new numbers. I say that because I think they are grossly overpaid.

Has Right-Wing Radio Run Its Course? - Business - The Atlantic Wire

The heavy-hitters of conservative radio talk shows are bleeding listeners according to Crain's. The industry report says Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and others hit a "slump" in October from which they've failed to recover. Limbaugh's ratings are down 33 percent, a large enough blow to prompt Salon's Alex Pareene to wonder if America might be done with Rush. However, given that Hannity's and fellow conservative Mark Levin's evening show are both down 28 percent, we have to wonder if the loud-mouthed, apocalypse-warning, slur-slinging pundits are a fad that's cooling like shutter shades or Pinkberry.

A poll out last week by Suffolk University showed 28 percent of Americans counted Fox as their most trusted source of news--a comfortable ten point lead on second place CNN. As we pointed out then, when asked which political reporter they most trusted, the vast majority of respondents said either "don't know" or "none."

I think the Arizona shootings had long reaching effects on radio listeners
while lots of people tried to deny the anger and rage, it was obvious that it had affected the listeners.
The facts they all slumped along with popularity of people like palin, angle, has and will take its toll
niggling guilt apparently gets the job done eventually

I doubt it.  I think people are sick of rants for now- and very much just want an escape.

I read an article about Beck's retirement, theorizing that as long as the economy is horrible, the con commentators will have an audience, but that things are improving.  Dunno if I believe that.

The October timing of the slump is interesting.  That's just before the elections.  I wonder if the Tea Party's performance might have anything to do with general disillusionment about the right.

Beck is apparently starting his own network, not sure if its a full blown TV or Radio thing or something akin to EIB.

Re October, thats why I asked what happened to npr's rating over the same time period. Its very convenient that they picked a baseline that would be the peak audience since 2008.

Not sure what you are referencing about the TPs performance.

Of course talk radio is dyeing it's demise is proclaimed every presidential election cycle.  It was dead because Clinton was elected again because he was reelected.  It was dead because Bush was elected and again because he was reelected and now because we have Obama it is dead again.   Hmmm   maybe it fits Mark Twain's statement  "rumors of my death are greatly exagerated

The Tea Party was responsible for generating a lot of anger and angst, geared towards a showing at the polls.  There'd be a natural letdown afterward.  Plus, the Tea Party's energy has waned now that they're somewhat in the system, and their policies are not proving popular.

The Tea Party is mainly angry at the obscene budget deficits and  national debt with inflation looming over us.  They are upset with many republicans and Bush 2 as well as democrats and Obama.  It's just that Obama and his spending fiasco was the last straw. I don't think their energy has waned and their agenda is much deeper than a showing at the polls.

I disagree about the energy waning. I think you will see an even greater presence once the Republican POTUS field starts to flesh out. Their policies aren't popular? With whom? The budget/deficits and debt ceiling are the closest thing to TP issues and they are very popular (except for the Mediscare nonsense which will turn around)

With me I think it all depends on who's naked.

NPR has enjoyed record highs, and that on top of a steady climb for the past two decades.

Bullshit. Talk radio and Fox News was built on the back of Bill Clinton. Right wingers don't trust news sources that don't reinforce their world view.
