Contentment -> Handcuffs and similar metal gear (6/1/2011 12:30:14 PM)

Preface: I'm a metal worker and a welding student. Looking into building a set of handcuffs and doing further exploration at BDSM related metal projects.

I was just wondering if there is an easy table or other method for getting the general sizes needed for handcuff inner diameter or similar things (neck, ankle, ect.). I'm doubting there is, but I also tend to do things the hard way if I don't ask others.

I'd be working with stainless steel probably, type 304 sounds best (cooking grade). I'd be using TIG if welding was needed, but I'd prefer cold working if possible.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Reasons this is a bad idea?

I have cold worked steel for ankle and wrist cuffs but used mild steel
I formmed the shape by forging round a former using a hammer
I silver brazed the hinges and made the locks too.
For wearer comfort I lined them with soft leather.
Not tried stainless but it is difficult to work cold as it is very springy

Yeah, is a bit springy. As for working with it cold, I plan to do this like one would make chainmail: Get a strip of stainless steel, bend it around a dowel (mild steel pipe, probably), then cut the created coil and bend it straight. Works with rod, might have to adjust my methods if I use sheet or plate. And, like I said before, I can just weld the metal in place if working it cold is too complicated/hard.

Still trying to find out how the "one size fits all" wrist size is determined.

from what I have seen on E-Bay and a lot of other sites
the one size fits all for wrist cuffs is about 2 1/2 -3 inches ID
if round and about 2 inches X 3 inches if oval shape
