Well I was going to go for option 5 because I had never heard of it, but I decided not to be lazy and google. It's not bad. I found a wiki page with some samples and I think they could be good to beat someone too.

My son is very into dubstep and is featuring it on the CD he is currently producing. It's just 'all right' with me but I'm an old hippie with songs of LZ in my head. :D

Sorry, I can't stand it. But I'm into rootsie-folkie-Americana sort of stuff. Give me some Po'Girl, Tanyas or Tracy any day.

From the DJ point of view, (Yes, I am a DJ) I love Dubstep. For the not so experienced, I would recommend roots-dub, or electro-dub, as an introduction to the deep basslines Dubstep has. Or, if you want to directly get into the not so ... brutal sides of Dubstep, you can get to youtube, and find a few Dubstep remixes of popular tunes... Mt. Eden is a must, for the beginner, since he has a soft, melodic hue in his work. Additionaly, you can find a few Nirvana, or Korn Dubstep remixes, even some Michael Jackson ones, in Youtube, to get a less alien sound-base...

Give me a link to an example of it. I've heard of it but haven't bothered checking it out.

Yes I have Skipper. I like them a lot. They are on my "gots to get" list. Your daughter has very good taste for a 9-year old.

Here are some of the not so "brutal" dubstep pieces I usually suggest to the not initiated.

Mt Eden Dubstep - Sarah McLachlan: Silence

Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit (Dual Dubstep Remix)

Korn - Coming Undone (Dual Dubstep Remix)

And, here are a few rootsdub, and electro-dub.

MOLARA & DUBMARGE " SPACE "

Zion Train - Follow Like Wolves (Original 12" Mix)

Revolutionary Dub Warriors - Walkabout

Hadn't heard of it before today.  Can't say that I was very impressed with the samples given.  But then again, I'm just an old fart that would still rather listen to CCR and the Eagles.

And to think this was the not brutal side of it... I guess giving you a brutal example will be a bad idea...

Yes... and so is a branch of industrial electronica lately, with breaks and deep corrupted basslines. That said, their BPM makes them more hardcore, or jungle, than Dubstep, but they can blend in, or get mixed with...

I've always really enjoyed electronic music (as well as other music) and this is no exception. Been enjoying it at Burning Man for a few years now.
