What do you expect with a diagnosis of dementia? Of COURSE she didnt trust Drs, she didnt trust anyone she didnt remember. The health care system failed both the patient and her niece with the lack of support and education that both needed, as evidenced by the outcome.

Tazzy, if it had not been for 1 Doctor out of several dozen over the years, that mentioned we could get Medicare paid assistance to take care of my parents, it would have been bad. There is so much out there, from non-profit, volunteer, and in home health care paid for by Insurance and Medicare, but as you say the information is just not there.

The extra years we could give my Mom and Dad, and allow them to pass away at home, surrounded by family and love, is worth everything that all of us had to do. It still requires a very commotted family member to step up, sometimes sacrificing years of their life or money made in a career. That family committment seems to be more rare these days.

The horror stories that the hospice people would tell us, were saddening, and I am not sure I could work in a field where some family abuse and take advantage of their elderly relatives.

Thats just it... help is out there... and no one knows how to tap into it. Those who should know should be helping those familes... and they dont care enough.

You ain't gonna see the insurance companies stepping in, and the death panels aren't there till like 2015, so the doctor patient relationship (no matter how dysfunctional) did not force any gubmint choice on her and her doctor. . .

Nope. It just ate up how much in legal fees, court time, jail time, the loss of custody of a child, the fight to get the child back... oh and the insignificant (sarcasm) pain and eventual life of an elderly woman who was in no way competent enough to make decisions.

IF you have an insurance carrier that does not drop you for exceeding the limit for care, OR you have medicare, which pays 80%.

A friend of mine just got a letter from his father's insurance carrier, it seems that the full time hospice care treatment for his father's cancer is nearing the annual limit for care paid for by the insurance company. And it is only June.

What do you suggest he do, willbe?

Do you believe someone who has no training in the medical... or insurance... field know where to look for that help?

Or, as I know, they are left to flounder for whatever they can find, or hope and pray someone is kind enough to clue them in.

Did I say anything about finding it? You've never even admitted its out there. Isn't it the responsibility of the sponsoring organization to make it known? Who is the sponsoring organization for most of those programs?

Excuse me! I need to know I am understanding this correctly. I know it's not you jlf1961, but the facts you have just posted are staggering.

An insurance company is proposing to withdraw its coverage of a person in a hospice because the cost may exceed the annual limit???????

Are people covered only until they're half dead?

Please excuse my incomprehension but that kind of thing is just unthinkable here. Such behaviour by any entity - personal or corporate - would be considered barbaric. Please tell me I am misunderstanding you.

tazzygirl -> RE: Death of 91-year-old spotlights line between care and killing (6/3/2011 7:48:26 PM)

Did I ever say it wasnt out there? Orion spoke of Hospice, did I argue that point or did I agree with him?

Yes, there is help... if you know where to look. Medical personnel are the gatekeepers to health care. That ball was dropped on that woman's head more than once.

And guess how plans are being modified to cope with the elimination of the lifetime limit?

Essentially yes, you have. You've ridden the wave of "XX million uninsured who cant get health care except in the ER".

tazzygirl -> RE: Death of 91-year-old spotlights line between care and killing (6/3/2011 7:54:58 PM)

I see the confusion.... I was speaking about home health, hospice, rehab, all those coming to the home to help a patient.

I, in no way, talked about how to finance any of that.

This post...

Help is not money... help is physical help in patient care.

yes, tweak, you understood him correctly.

Is that legal? Are companies allowed to behave like that? If an insurance company behaved like that here, it would be shut down - either by the Govt or people refusing to do business with it. There would be a furore. People would demand it change its ways or it would be put out of business in a week. Even to suggest such a policy would guarantee bankruptcy, commercial death.

This is indefensible, incomprehensible. I can understand someone chasing a $ but this is callous - pure 100% evil. It is little short of murder.

Is this a commonplace practice? Please tell me it isn't. Please.

tazzygirl -> RE: Death of 91-year-old spotlights line between care and killing (6/3/2011 8:31:19 PM)

Once you max out, thats it. And it is legal. They arent denying medical care, just denying payment for it.

~ETA

There is a yearly limit the insurance company will pay based upon the terms of the agreement. Its all quite legal. The patient then has to wait till the next year, meet their deductible again before the insurance will pay more.

Egillandpet -> RE: Death of 91-year-old spotlights line between care and killing (6/3/2011 8:41:06 PM)

since girl came in late let her add this.... Masters work offers insurance to cover girl and master... Not the um... Master is not um's biological father, the um goes without because we make too much to get state help but too little to get private help..... Companies are cutthraot.... Job girl has is CMA and the coding is outrageous for money money money!!!

Thanks for that tazzy. I was afraid you were going to say something like that.

I have no idea why people tolerate such a totally unnecessary, evil state of affairs. The only winners appear to be the insurance companies' stockholders. It can't be pleasant for their employees - it must be pure hell to make and carry out decisions like those jlf1961 described above.

And it's surely a disaster for the people who have paid their premiums faithfully year after year. Not to mention their families. I'd imagine the additional stress caused by such gaps in the system would end up killing quite a few more people too.

The whole state of affairs is too sad for words. I really hope you guys get a decent universal healthcare system soon.
