Ok I know this will be a big opinionated question but I want to put it out there. Everyone has their favorites with ropes, metal, or leather bondage. The thing I would like to ask is what is it that you like about leather and don't like. Feel free to give your honest opinions.
Thank you and have fun.

Pros:

Leather is comfortable
Leather is easily used for those who haven't much experience with rope
Leather is a kink by itself to many
Leather usually smells the best
Leather sounds good while sub is struggling

Cons:

Leather is comfortable [;)]
Leather is more expensive then rope (but cheaper then good metal restraints)
Subs who like to try to escape generally prefer rope because leather (and metal) are usually inescapable
A few kinksters don't like leather (some vegans and a few others)
Leather is less versatile with what you can do with it then rope
It's hard to do shibari with leather

I agree with you fully on that. But there are a few thing that leather does have over ropes.
One being that with the right design leather can be worn in public and still be discreet enough not to draw unwanted attention and still function well.
Then there is also like my case where my sub likes to struggle and ropes are not conducive for play time. Because Oklahoma laws are against it. So with leather leaving less marks if any it is the smarter choice.
Now don't get me wrong I love the Shibari style very much but the sound of creaking leather gets to me every time.

I usually avoid leather; I'm almost always turned off by the connotation it brings. I don't have a problem with the leather crowd per se, I'm just tired of an industry that has created somewhat of a cliché in the use of black leather cuffs, collars, ball gags and shiny O rings. Rustic metal doesn't suffer this problem as much in my mind, and it's also far more reliable in keeping a human under lock and key. Rope is nice, but I don't have too much patience for complex binds and knots. Bamboo makes wonderful canes and spreaders. I will say that I do like leather for braided whips. I have a lovely eight foot long bullwhip, single tail and cat-o-nine, all of which create incredible pain with efficiency and art.

Outside of the above, I don't make too much of a fetish of the implements themselves; they are tools to me, in the end—tools to be respected, well cared for and happy to own, but tools, nonetheless.

Leather - Pure simplicity.

Rope is pretty and all of that.  Very pleasing to the eye when it looks just so, but it's also a time investment.  If My purpose is to beat someone, I'd rather spend the time doing that than worrying if My knots are just so.  I've got to give it to rope people who are really into it because it's darn near a form of art.  Me, I'm just wanting to secure a person to get to what I deem to be the fun part.

Also, a consideration that you gentlemen don't deal with.  I keep My nails rather long.  That can be something of an annoyance when it comes time to untie someone.

why would Oklahoma laws not be conducive
or cut into your play time?

My sentiments exactly. There are two forms of effective binds I use with rope, and I leave it at that. Shibari is aesthetically pleasing, but not entirely practical. Chain and manacles or a steel cage with a dog bed immobilizes someone long-term well enough without concerns of disrupting circulation—which is often my primary worry with rope.

Don't get Me wrong, Marc.  I really admire the dedication of some rope folks.  The fact that they work so hard to make the perfect picture, getting their knots just so, etc.  I'm the same way wanting to 'perfect' other forms of play.  Just different strokes for different folks.

Oklahoma has a law against consensual assault and classifies BDSM as such. So if the local authorities see something they don't like (like rope burns or bruises) they can have the state press charges. Then have the so called "assaulter" thrown I'm prison. That is why ropes are not the best choice for me.

sounds like Oklahoma is a vanilla type place
if they don't want people to be able to play

Well, of course. Advanced rope is an art study, once taken beyond functional utility. I like looking at those artsy black and white pictures of Asian females tied up in vulnerable and excruciating positions. To that end, I see its real-world application for pure sadism if you have the patience and skill. Learning by rote all the complex ties is something I've had as a mental sticky note posted in my mind for a while now. Someday, I tell myself.

EclipseAbove -> RE: To Leather or not (6/8/2011 5:11:48 PM)

Leather restraints are what I use if I just need to "get the job done". If I want something pretty, I often use rope. Although, being a very visual person there are times when leather just fits with the overall image I'm looking to create - all leather outfit with gag, collar and restraints to match.
