Maybe the reason our tax rate is so high is because with all the loop holes a high rate is needed to collect any tax.

So rather then Republicans and Democrats blaming each other why not work together to LOWER our tax rate to be competitive with other industrial nations and at the same time remove the loopholes and subsidies.

This would make us a more attractive place for industry and at the same time fill the government coffers.

I don't know much about this stuff (well nothing really), but I had an idea when I read this.

What if your government raised the tax rate on the returns on these foreign investments and reduced or eliminated the taxes on the the returns on domestic investments. I'm probably not seeing something, but I think this would both increase tax revenue and seriously encourage domestic investment. Wouldn't that be a win-win?

Thus my confusion. My post was in reference to offshoring of assets. I dont see anything in that link that addresses it.

Tell me something, willbe. If money is in offshore accounts, and invested elsewhere, what taxes are paid and to what country?

If money is inherited from those accounts, do they pay inheritance taxes or are the names just switched?

What taxes are paid from the interest accrued in those accounts? And to what country?

US taxes are owed on offshore investment gains and savings interest. Im not sure whether there is a credit for taxes paid in that jurisdcition as there is for salary income. And yes, estate tax is owed on total assets, regardless of where they are parked.

Didnt I read a few years back about how not all of these accounts were known, or reported?

I believe there is a credit Willbe, I know there is one in Canada. I also seem to recall (when I was working at an accounting office) there being a form they had  for U.S. clients verifying Canadian taxes paid on investments/income in Canada.

And yeah Tazzy, that's pretty much the whole point of offshore accounts. Places like Switzerland and the Grand Cayman's have (or at least did have) non-disclosure policies, so the accounts and their contents were kept confidential and not released to anybody.

People cheat in any way they can figure out to cheat. They don't have to go offshore to do it.

Switzerland was a safe haven for banking since the depression. However, the Swiss banking privacy laws have less and less teeth, and after they turned over data on US tax evaders in 2009 (give or take a year) isn't a particularly safe place for tax avoidance any longer.

The Cayman islands have the toughest privacy laws (at least among relatively politically stable countries) and even they will release information if there is a court order regarding criminal activity (including US tax evasion).
