http://www.todaysfacilitymanager.com/articles/messy-desk-messy-mind-not-so-fast.php

After years of trying and failing to maintain a tidy desk or workspace, I have just given up and that because In my mess I know where everything is and what needs doing, whereas in industry I have always been chastised for the way I work despite being the most productive. Something which I believe has hindered my career, especially my last employer, he an ex military warrant officer, my work space used to drive him nuts and he would stop production to make me tidy up and then wonder why subsequent days my production was down, to which I got more shit, until I messed the place up again, then production was massively enhanced.

Now don't get me wrong, the mess does get tidied up from time to time, and that because I lose track of where things are, but tidying is the start of the process, to find things to then create another mess, my own personal mind map and reminders.

But perhaps Albert Einstein was correct ;

"If a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, of what, then is an empty desk?"

So what are you, organised or the very epitome of chaos, a clean desk or a messy desk ?

And what are you in terms of production ?

Work things - very organized.
personal stuff - mostly organized.
I have a section of my space that is specifically "messy zone" and I have a bowl that I just throw stuff in.  I like it that way. I have too many projects and am way too forgetful to be disorganized.

Even the files on my computer are amazingly organized.

I'm weird.

This sounds like a smart-ass comment, but in all honesty, I'm not organized enough to be organized. I envy people who are, and I love things when they are all organized and in special places, but I've never been disciplined enough to actually do it for more than a moment. Sometimes I get a wild itch and buy containers with compartments and that kind of stuff, but more often than not, they sit unused till I get another wild itch.

At work, though, I'm the opposite, for some reason, lol.

I'm very organized, Hanners not so much. But the housework and tidying up is my job, so our place is tidy and has neat stacks of papers (to be dealt with, being dealt with, to be filed away), the books are sorted by author, the cupboards are organized so you can know which one to open to get what you want, and so on. It makes life very easy.

Its not that I'm anal about it, but I often have nothing else to do but clean house, and its a very small apartment with just 3 rooms, so it doesn't take long to clean, and I get bored.

Most people wouldn't know it by looking at my desk, but I am very organized. I have a pile for everything, and everything is in it's pile. I know what's there! To some it may look like chaos, but it works for me.

This.
At work, I may let my stuff get cluttered and messy looking, but at the end of my shift, everything is back in order.

Like several above, I use the sedimentation filing system.   Older stuff can be found on the bottom of the stacks.

ParappaTheDapper -> RE: Messy Desk= Messy Mind ? (6/3/2011 11:17:52 AM)

I tend to be impeccably neat! I also keep a minimalist decor. This is partially due to a natural love of stark, barren, desert-like aesthetics, but it's mostly self-preservation. I lose my keys, wallet, books, papers, pets, basically anything placed in my stewardship as a matter of course unless I am a total control freak about my surroundings.

So my mind is definitely messy but I hedge against that my keeping my desk quite neat and as empty as possible!

Only partially related, but a lover gave me a novelty wallet that looks just like a folded map as a Valentine. It's adorable and precious and I love it, but the problem is when you're always losing your wallet and you have a wallet that cunningly camouflages itself as a map it can become quite maddening especially when in a rush or slightly tipsy or both!

damn you, Para!! now that song is stuck in my head....

back to topic, now...LOL

LaTigresse -> RE: Messy Desk= Messy Mind ? (6/3/2011 11:39:42 AM)

My desks are always rather messy because I am always doing more than one thing. It tends to drive the neat freaks around me crazy, but too bad, it's just the way I function best. I need to keep the things I am working on, or need to work on, where I can see them. Otherwise they don't get done.

Out of sight often times, really is out of mind, for me.

GreedyTop -> RE: Messy Desk= Messy Mind ? (6/3/2011 11:44:48 AM)

me too, LaT

(scritches to tehcritters)

lol At least it's a good song!

Also back to the OP I thought about it for a moment and I guess I'd have to say that in my case there is a definite correlation between my messy mind and the tidiness of my desk because I overcorrect my naturally scattered brain by being super-diligent about organization.

I am not nearly as organized as i want. I am trying to get organized once again over the weekend and then keep everything organized. It takes time and effort to change bad habits one falls into tho. I must be vigilant and kick my own ass. [>:]

I hate being disorganized cuz it costs me time and sometimes money too, like when i buy a book that i already own, stuff like that. I like being efficient and you need to be organized first before you can do that. I like to be organized cuz when i am then I have an order in which i do things, so i do each in its turn and cross it off my list. It clears the mind. I am happier, i feel more productive, like things are unfolding as they should. I feel I have more control over my life.

I need to get to the gym now. ta ta

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: Messy Desk= Messy Mind ? (6/3/2011 12:30:32 PM)

I am one of the messy desk kind of people. I had a job one time where while I was working, my area looked much like a cyclone had struck, but I knew exactly where everything was. And it would all be put away nice & neatly before I left for the day. And I would do the tidying after my shift was over, so they never had to pay me to clean up my own mess. One day I went out to get food & when I came back, someone had put some of the things away. I was lost!! So I explained to everyone: what looks like chaos to you is my filing system!! After that they left my area alone.

At home, I like things like Heather, all of my cupboards & closets are impeccably organized due to my particular brand of CDO. I have a friend who puts things away randomly. So there may be games amongst the clothes & the spices in a cupboard. And I'm not exaggerating!! Makes my brain twitch.
