What else would you base it on considering religion, and specifically Islam, is the very basis of the polls...at least in relation to the general population.

It would have been nice to have had the same questions directed at Christians for comparison. However if these polls are valid then the general population outside of Muslims would be majority Christian if any religion at all.

Too, in all fairness, in what appears to be the largest and most recent study cited by the article, and the one it makes the most hay of, the proposition presented asks if violence against civilians is justified, "to defend Islam from its enemies." The earlier studies had simply asked whether "attacks in which civilians are the target" could be justified.
