I don't see any prior threads on this specific topic. The "musical clarity" thread includes obscure acts or very well known songs. Please include only songs from groups that aren't likely to invoke a "who the hell is that", and no song that ever made top 40. Links would be great, but if the song is really unknown, they may not even exist.

My nomination, after scouring their discography to vote for a song for internet request night, is Steely Dan's "Only a Fool Would Say That". An example of a perfectly constructed 3 minute pop/rock song, imo. Hints of the "Wes Montgomery" guitar that would dominate their most popular albums, but pretty much disregarded when "Can't Buy a Thrill/Do it Again" was on the charts.

(Since SternSkipper is bound to join, I'll give a nod to those boys from Boston and "Cruisin' for a Love" as another example of perfection).

Hard to think of tracks like that out of the blue but speakin' of Steely Dan I reckon Charlie Freak from Pretzel Logic from their early band line-up (1974) stands out thou for the darkness of the lyrics rather than the music. "Ida Lee" a track which can be found on a few of those semi-legal releases of early recordings stands out IMO. It has a very unusual 80's jazzy vibe for a basic demo from 1969/70!!! Another track is Glamour Profession from their final album Gaucho (1980) before their reunion. Couldn't say if its underrated or not but AFAIK hasn't been on any compilations unlike most of da other tracks on that album. The link is an edit. Its an amazing piece of music about as finely realised as one could imagine.

My fav Dr Hook song......Bad Eye Bill

This song has always made me smile, but I seldom find anyone who has actually heard of it.

Thank the good lord for rock and roll
Thank the good lord for gin
Thank the good lord that women are made to satisfy their men
Thank the good lord for Black and Red and our good buddy Will
Thank the good lord most of all, for good old Bad Eye Bill
Bad Eye Bill from Maryville, got a yellow dog named Black
A blonde haired wife called Red, that runs around behind Bill's back
Bad Eye Bill and his buddy Will are known to take a drink or ten
Will would pick up an old guitar and Bad Eye Bill will sing
Thank the good lord for rock and roll
Thank the good lord for gin
Thank the good lord that women are made to satisfy their men
Thank the good lord for Black and Red and our good buddy Will
Thank the good lord most of all, for good old Bad Eye Bill
Bad Eye Bill got locked in jail, 'bout a week or so ago
Swore to the jailer and the preacher that the good lord had saved his soul
Bill went home found Black and Red in bed with his buddy Will
He shot 'em all and he started singin', and he's still singin' in jail
Thank the good lord for rock and roll
Thank the good lord for gin
Thank the good lord that women are made to satisfy their men
Thank the good lord for Black and Red and our late buddy Will
Thank the good lord most of all, for good old Bad Eye Bill
Thank the good lord for rock and roll
Thank the good lord for gin
Thank the good lord that women are made to satisfy their men
Thank the good lord for Black and Red and my late buddy Will
Thank the good lord most of all, for good old Bad Eye Bill
