oh, and Dinty Moore Beef stew.....they've changed the formulation on the gravy.....to cut out the fat, since it used to be in little globs at the top of the can.....the gravy was thick and grainy coming right out of the can, but cooked nice and smooth.  Now it's more watery, more soup-like instead of true gravy.  And it doesn't taste the same.  Even the color is changed.....it now looks like it's got Gracy Master stuff in it, not the gray brown it used to be.

Sometimes, they shouldn't mess with perfection......I'm eating more and more generic foods because they actually taste better than the "original".  Off hand, I can't think of any foods that I only buy "the label" product.  My cupboards are full of white cans!  And of course, the price/money saved doesn't hurt either!

Come to think of it now, cat food is the only thing I can't buy in the generic stuff.  My beasties are used to either Fancy Feast or Friskies....and even then, only certain kinds.

So is graham crackers with frosting.  (A treat my mother used to make for me.)

Oh wow, that's a memory I had forgotten!!! My mom used to decorate cakes for people so she made those for me frequently with the leftover frosting. So good!!! Thanks for that one! [:)]

My grandma would make us butter and sugar sandwiches......lots of plain old white sugar and real butter slathered between two pieces of Wonder Bread!  nomnomnomnummynomnomnom!

Considering how us "older" folks used to eat, I'm surprised we're still here!  But then again...maybe all those preservatives are the reason!  *snort*

And Wonder Bread really DID last a couple of weeks!

Why do you think it is called Wonder Bread"?

Mom used to whip up a small batch of butter, cocoa and powdered sugar to make chocolate frosting.  I made some for my own boys years ago when they were small, and made myself one for old times sake.  Blech!

I decided that some good memories are best left to just memory.  [;)]

When I was a little kid in the 60s I loved Special K cereal.  Back then  the flakes were small and crunchy and yummy.  Then, about 20 years ago, they made the flakes bigger - like corn flakes - and totally ruined the cereal for me.  I haven't eaten it since. [:'(]

Aynne88 -> RE: Flavor changes (6/5/2011 5:58:49 PM)

When I was a kid I used to love peanut butter, now I can't even stand the smell of it. I also used to hate most fish and now I could eat sushi every day. Oh and things like candy....I used to love licorice, especially twizzlers. Now I can't eat  that either.

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: Flavor changes (6/5/2011 6:02:16 PM)

In my family, we got our sugar & butter rolled up in potato lefse, not bread. Yummmers!!! And the fact that we older people are still around & pretty healthy I think says more for the lack of crap in our food as children. My mom & Granny made most everything from scratch. At Granny's the eggs came right out of the chickens & the chicken we ate was fresh killed. She didn't go to a supermarket for much. We took the bus into the city & went to the Pike Place Market for fruits & vegetables & she bought her meat at the Pure Food Market or she went to the butcher in Ballard. She even made her own lunchmeat, Rollepulse. And that's another thing that won't ever taste right, since nobody makes it with mutton anymore. Anybody even know where to buy mutton???

peppermint -> RE: Flavor changes (6/5/2011 6:08:36 PM)

Nabisco chocolate chip cookies.  I grew up on those things as my mom and aunt worked for Nabisco.  The cookies don't have the same taste or texture they had way back when.

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: Flavor changes (6/5/2011 6:13:09 PM)

Oreos. They took the lard out of the frosting & they're just not as good. [:(]

As far as I'm concerned most packaged cookies were totally ruined when they started making them chewy.  Yuck.  I miss that crunch.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Flavor changes (6/5/2011 6:22:08 PM)

Hostess products, and most packaged baked goods. Just NOT GOOD. Ditto canned soups, which taste like saltwater with garnish to me.

Shoot, if it's processed, it ain't what it used to be. Just as well to avoid it.

Don't get me started on fresh tomatoes with bug resistent skin you can't get a knife through!

Just about everything that I eat or drink no longer tastes the way it did about... six months to a year ago. It sort of freaks me out a little bit. I know tastes change over time and all that jazz... but I can't imagine every company I've ever purchased food or drink from suddenly changing their recipes. ~_~

try coke zero ;)

actually, fountain coke is close to old coke....

Greedy, I find that to be true as well. Nothing like a fountain coke where the machine mixes the water, syrup and carbonisation right there on the spot!
I've always liked Coke better than Pepsi. Coke has a nice "bite" to it, Pepsi just tastes too sweet and flat.

I used to go to the drugstore in town & get real coca cola that they made by putting the syrup in the glass & adding the carbonated water & stirring it. I hate fountain coke now. It tastes watery to me. I love the Mexican Coca Cola & get it as a treat sometimes.

Pretty much nothing tastes like it used to. Remember when store-bought bread only lasted a few days, not a couple of months??? Or maybe only us old farts can remember that. I pretty much avoid most packaged foods except for a couple of different kinds of cereal. My one exception is generic mac n cheese. OMG!! Talk about a comfort food from the past!!! And I made it one day decades ago, then discovered that my milk had gone bad, so I used sour cream instead. I always use sour cream now, never even buy milk. Milk tastes blah to me because I was brought up on raw whole milk.

As for yogurt & sour cream, I don't skimp on those. I buy plain Greek yogurt which is nothing but milk & cultures. I can no longer eat store-bought ice cream because of all the additives; it makes me physically ill. Ice cream should be cream, sugar & whatever flavor, fruit whatever one puts in it. Ever read the list of ingredients on a container of ice cream? It contains about 25 items now. WTF is all that crap???
Try the Haagen-Dazs "Five" Series. Expensive, but real.

Thank you. I'll get some next week when I feel like treating myself to something yummy!

daddy bought me a can of cambles beef an veggie soup, maybe it's cuz I eat soups like that cold but I doubt it cause I have had plenty a cold canned soup. took one bit. An all you could taste was the salt. It seriously was like would you like some soup with your salt.

needlesandpins -> RE: Flavor changes (6/6/2011 10:48:40 AM)

i think that the fact alot of our foods taste difefrent is down to gm. wheat has been gm'd for years and the quality has definately changed over the years. i have always been a really good pastry maker and can tell the difference in qualtity with how it turns out. some are just manky.

everything processed is just pumped full of cheap shit these days. cooking methods in factories are also different which affects how things taste. some of the chicken i've had in precooked meals is more like solid jelly rather than actual meat.

my son will turn his nose up at alot of things ready made because he knows how different it tastes when i make it.

i can't stand soggy cookies either. what is it with American cookies that are soggy? they taste like they are going off to me. mind you i've never had real American cookies actually in America but the ones we have here are pants. i like a cookie to be crispy, it's a buscuit for crying out loud not a cake.
