As for the water depletion scenario you mentioned, why couldn't we build a few desalination plants, purify ocean water, ship it to the ethanol producers, etc?
 
 

Well that is energy used to create secondary energy. Not very efficient. But Desalinization will soon be needed, just for water itself in many areas.
Nice to see some great remarks. Meatcleaver's was very good. So much nothingness that we work so hard for.

Ethanol is quite energy intensive to produce, and consider that all the land we now use for other things will still be needed. To produce ethanol for fuel will require more land and water on top of that. And energy.

Brasil offsets it's energy with ethanol. They have oil and natural gas. And they started to be energy self sufficient a long time ago.

I work at the base level of the oil and gas industry. Right now I am benifiting from an artificial boom. But I keep well read, and know the bust is coming. A hard one too.
