California To Outlaw Gold Prospecting

juliaoceania -> RE: California To Outlaw Gold Prospecting (6/6/2011 11:52:38 AM)

I think if you understood the plight of the salmon in the Golden State you would get this decision.

pahunkboy -> RE: California To Outlaw Gold Prospecting (6/6/2011 11:55:52 AM)

So if I stick a pan in a river- I will be illegal?

How dumb.

mnottertail -> RE: California To Outlaw Gold Prospecting (6/6/2011 11:58:10 AM)

It's The Mail---- and they are working to outlaw suction dredging.  Your pan is ok.  You should learn to read, cogitate, and discriminate.

pahunkboy -> RE: California To Outlaw Gold Prospecting (6/6/2011 12:00:22 PM)

No, a pan stirs up the mud and kills the fish. A pan is now illegal.

You should REALLY read the link before you post it

quote:

Up to 4,000 people in California use suction dredging to extract gold.
It involves motorised rigs which act like giant vacuum cleaners, sucking up mud and gravel from the bottom of a watercourse and then using gravity to sort tiny quantities of gold from the rocks and dirt.

It`s not that PA likes gold-digging all that much,he just hates salmon.[;)]

I like salmon fine, as long as it isn't on my plate.

A wet dry vacumn that most people own.  The law is onerous.

Unless they were panning up-stream from you.......

Then it would be valid.

Is it really that hard to understand that we have 4000 operations ongoing, and many more wannabe fly-by-nights with their shop vacs, dredging up our rivers? The salmon population is precarious, and they mean more to me than assholes with gold fever.

If you had spent any time in the river system of California looking at how the ecology of the stream works, you would know that these types of operations do not do damage at the site where the mining occurs, but miles down the river bed.

I grew up in Gold Country, and I grew up knowing quite a bit more than you about river ecology. I also saw the scars from past attempts to use the power of water to extract gold, the scars from hydraulic mining are obscene, and still apparent well over a century after it was done.

^ California is nothing with out tourism.  If people think they cant play gold miner-  they wont come and spend money.

Best be careful with environmentalism. ..the Central Valley is a disaster now - due to water laws.

Why would people even want gold?  It is outdated relic- if you go by the feds.

Maybe the article is sloppily written... they now bust kids for selling lemonade tho.

How many tourists are out there panning gold in the rivers? Have you ever even visited here? It boggles that you think California tourists are all dying to take shop vacs into the hot sun and dredge the rivers.... do you have any concept how hard it is to gold pan? It is laughable to me that you would even suggest this is a major tourist attraction

Our water problems go WAY back and it isn't the environmental laws that are the problem... its all you out of staters that keep moving to Los Angeles.... too many freaking people is the problem

How many of tourists do you think visit California every year to try their hand at suction dredging?

I am gonna just grab a guess out of the air, so; don't laugh if you already know the answer..... somewhat considerably less than 2.

I'd say its another example of small-time innocents and tourists being harmed out of business and enjoyment by the damaging actions and sophisticated equipment of the corporate version of their profession.

For some people, "a little" is not enough and technology is no obstacle. So everybody suffers when the process gets outlawed.
