Seriously, just read this now in craigslist :

"Serious or repeated legal or drug/alcohol problems will be considered when evaluating the applicant. "

Will be considered. LOL. You know what that means.

Does your city have a prison union ? This one does. Shit, there are two unions that simply don't care, all they care is what you do for them. Or to them I guess. But really, what does that mean ? "Yall clean squeaky people, needn't ought apply".

But if you just fell out of the joint, where the hell do you get a job, get in line with the Phds applying at McD's ? But think about it, how is there any rehabilitation without work ? These people frequently have multiple child support payments that generally aren't forgiven when they are incarcerated, and just to keep a fucking driver's license they have to pay sometimes more than they make. While that is their problem, when faced with all the adversity, no wonder we have such wonderful recidivism rates. They can't make it. I know a few. Of course others are assholes and should just be shot, but that is beside the point. You walk out the door, supposedly free but you have to pay two grand a month. Minimum wage is what, about eight bucks ? That's $1,300 a month gross. It ain't happenin'. That simple.

But then the guy is cool with driving, so he can go get a job at the local 310, contruction labor. The work is hard, but it pays decent, I think it's getting close to twenty bucks an hour. There is alot to know to do the job and it is demanding. They love it and it has to be done. But they don't bring these buildings to you, you must go to them. Try that on a bus. What's more many more can do route sales or just drive a local trick. They're not going to squeexe the Charmin or steal the Wonderbread. After a few years in the joint they are not going to easily risk their ability to get a piece of ass or hang out with their "dudes".

So, what I've seen happen over the years is that alot of convicted felons just go into business for themselves. Now for those of you who might be less than confortable with that, this system casues it.

How many people do we have to lock up and then make sure they never get a decent chance at life until people realize that this system is not working ? All of them ? It wasn't a life sentence.

I was damn lucky that I never had to eat anything big, so I don't have that encumberance, but in this country, with jobs so tight, and expecting more out of those who have erred in the past, are we being productive in this manner ?

While you are pondering this, like why someone has to be drug tested to clean your carpet, consider the meaning the founding Fathers had in mind when they used the term "Bill Of Attainder". Has the person paid their debt to society or not ?

Now I am not talking about murderers and rapists here. We have a hell of alot of people here serving time for dealing a few pounds of smoke and shit like that. Consider that, as you consider who also should be denied their right to carry a firearm. Did they hurt someone ? Or did they just want to buy or sell; something and would prefer there be no trouble ?

Or are they a theif ? If a theif, well maybe they shouldn't be a cashier or a few other things. Where would an ex-rapist work ? I say kill the MF and the question is moot, but you all won't go along with wholesale executions so I don't know what to tellya. Murderers, if you don't want to kill them and don't want to feed and clothe them forever, what do you suggest ?

No, there was alot more to it.

But so what if he does ?

ETA : In fact here's the ad :

"Building restoration company is looking to hire at least two new craftsmen for masonry repair and restoration projects.
Tuckpointing, caulking and cleaning experience is mandatory for one of the openings.
Bricklaying, both new construction and rebuilding of existing structures, experience is mandatory for the second opening.
Experience with scaffolding, swing stages and or manlifts will be considered helpful in deciding on the applicants.
Applicants will be asked to performe hands on test in our shop to verify skills. You should at least have the basic tools for the job being applied for.
This is a non union company that expects its employees to complete all job tasks, from prep, to setting scaffold, to mixing mud if necessary, all the way through to possible wall painting and clean up.
Union employees are welcome to apply with the understanding that their union status has no bearing on employment at this company.
Valid drivers liscense and transportation required. This will be checked when asked to fill out formal application.
Background check is completed. Serious or repeated legal or drug/alcohol problems will be considered when evaluating the applicant.

I like it.    That employer is going to have his hands full, but he's wanting to start honest.  I'm curious as to what his work requirements are for a person with a substance abuse problem.   He can't let them on the work site jacked up, it's a liability for him.   He could, however, set up a great system to reward them for staying clean.

Boy Term, that's not a lot of money, that's just above subsistance level.
I know some bricklayers in Md. and they make a lot more than that!

Yeah well times are tough here.

But we got a situation now, when you smoke pot it stays in your system for like a month. You are not high at work. You are not even hung over. You can't be.

So on a Saturday night you decide to burn one, your job is gone. You didn't do any more, and you didn't have to be at work until Monday morning.

And someone who gets busted with an ounce can never have a good job again.

Bricklayers with good jobs here also make alot more, they are getting up into like forty bucks an hour, plus some kickass benefits. But that's only if you want to work for the union. That's good when there are alot of stadiums or something going up, but normally it ain't the greatest. They all get side jobs, some go south to work in the winter. They call them snowbirds.

But now here's the thing. If you are a fuddy duddy and don't want to ever have any interaction with anyone who has ever smoked a fucking joint, that's your business. So what happens ?

Well you go downtown and get a bonding company, pay a few bucks. You get insurance, pay a few bucks. You get a contractor's license, pay a few bucks. You could be high on crack and pimping out your Mother the whole time !

So the Man at the top is a "scumbag" but all his employees are squeaky clean. Feel better now ?

Depends on what part of the country you're in.   Here in the south that would be on the very high end of the pay scale for craft and in the range of what an RN is paid.   This said, the ad specifically mentions union membership so I presume this is closer to your part of the country where the cost of living is much higher.

Yet minimum wage is below 8 an hour.
