He's right. The sooner we get away from gasoline and go to other liquid fuels or electricity- the more money we'll all have. If we can pull out of the Middle East-the defense saving will offset most if not all of this tax increase.

No, the oil companies are robbing you of your money- haven't you noticed the increase in gas prices? That doesn't go to GM. GM would rather build electric cars which will cost much less per mile of driving. Oil companies are very unhappy with this idea.

I know 2 people that have bought bigger cars- because the kids all need car seats.    So to follow the law they are required to have a bigger car.     and the $1 a gallon tax is a robbery.

Well hunky, there's an old saying. "If ya can't feed em, dont breed em"
If you can't afford to support children fully, dont fuckin HAVE em. If they have em anyway, dont fuckin WHINE.

Did they go from a Smart Car to a Corolla or a Corolla to an Expedition?

They went from an SUV to a bigger SUV bus.

My sister has 3 kids a hubby and mom.   A friend has a hubby  and 4 kids.   All kids are under 4.

You know what is really funny to ME? My parents had 6 kids and SUV's didn't exist. Neither did mini vans. Somehow, they managed.

I seldom go anywhere.  A tank of gas lasts me 6-8 weeks.

When I google "vehicle most seating lowest mpg" 2 of the top 3 results are from the UK. Guess Americans don't care about this. Except now, when gas prices are high.

For the record, the Mitsubishi Outlander gets 28 MPG highway and seats 7.

Of course, as a former owner of a Geo Metro that got 60 MPG highway, I'm not impressed. (I wouldn't have hauled a family in it, but it was great for commuting.)

Cars were bigger then and car seats didn't exist.

This is a back handed attempt to force people to buy G M cars such as the $41,000.00 chevy volt.

I want to know how having less money each month to put towards buying a new car is going to get me into a new car faster? Do they honestly think we have the money to buy one, but just don't feel like it today?

Yes, but back then it wasn't against the law to have 5 kids in back and 2 in front. If you had a pickup, you could haul the whole baseball team.

This is astounding since GM killed the street car- and the electric car- and most recently the EV1.

So how is that supposed to work ? After we pull out of the Middle East then the government sends us our money back ?  I think we would just be fueling the insatiable appetite for politicians to keep spending and not doing much to solve our problems with energy.

I don't think the technology far enough beyond it's infancy to make it all feasible, especially with alternative liquid fuels. We're still subsidizing freakin ethanol with it's crappy return in gas mileage, and we don't have electric charging stations on every corner yet not to mention all the coal we have to burn to generate those stations. The supporting infrastructure and solving other associated problems is a long ways off yet.
