Only for born again Christians. Interesting. My Rabbi, who is approaching 70, is still in great form, still working a full schedule as a college professor as well as teaching Bar Mitzvah classes, heading the synagogue, and teaching Torah study. Obviously they would all benefit from converting to Judaism.

I suspect the atrophy identified in the OP to be atheists' fault. The well known propensity of atheists to refuse to engage in meaningful discussion and exchange with believers reduces the demands upon believers' brains, leading eventually to decay and malfunction. Yet another example of the vile insidious effects of the evil known as atheism.

Incontrovertible evidence that proves this theory beyond any reasonable doubt can be found here.

Junk science.

"Religious" is defined as Protestant or Catholic, ignoring all other religions as well as agnosticism.  And there is no proof that the religion is the cause and the brain shrinkage is the effect.  Could be the other way 'round. Or there could be an unknown factor that causes both.

It could have been a more rigorous study but I wouldn't go so far as to call it junk science. I think there is some truth that the more open-minded a person is to new ideas the less atrophy in the brain.
