Brain -> The BRAD BLOG : On 10th Anniversary of Bush Tax Cuts, What We Could Have Had Instead (6/8/2011 2:19:51 AM)

The same billionaires who complain about having to pay any taxes are often the same ones who benefit from public subsidies and they make their millions from public funds that flow into the military-industrial complex.

The society the American right has created is for most citizens the harshest of any industrial "democracy." It has the greatest gap between rich and poor and a horrific health care system where 45,000 citizens are condemned to die annually because they can't afford health insurance.

The Plutocrat Party otherwise known as the GOP places the wealth of the privileged above health, education, safety, a sustainable economy and even a liveable planet, which is why they happily deny global climate change.

- courtesy of Think Progress, is just a few of the things this country could have had for the same 10-year price tag as those tax cuts for rich people who didn't need them...

- Give 122.7 Million Children Low-Income Health Care Every Year For Ten Years
- Give 49.2 Million People Access To Low-Income Healthcare Every Year…

So how are the current crop of GOP contenders for the 2012 Presidential nomination responding? Here is former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty's economic plan, as outlined in a speech today, which promises to triple the size of the existing Bush tax cuts...

All together, Pawlenty’s tax proposal would generate an average revenue level of just 13.6 percent of GDP from 2013-2021. That translates to a tax cut of $7.8 trillion, and that’s on top of $2.5 trillion cost of extending all of the Bush tax cuts (see below for details on how this estimate was calculated).

For every asshole, there is an equal and opposite asshole.

CBO: Extend Bush Tax Cuts to Boost Economy
In a significant story that receive scant attention from the national news media, CBO Director Douglas Elmendorf says that keeping the Bush tax cuts that affect upper-income taxpayers, small businesses and investors will give the weakened economy a "considerable" economic boost over the next several years and create jobs that will drive down unemployment.

The excerpt above comes from a conservative source, and neglects to mention that the recommendation was for the tax cuts to be extended only temporarily. Ezra Klein went the other way, neglecting to mention that the CBO recommended the tax cuts be extended at all.

The measured view actually expressed by the CBO in 2010 is echoed by the IMF. Higher taxes are not a good idea at present, in the current situation.

Cut taxes to boost economy, IMF tells George Osborne
George Osborne should reduce taxes rather than relax his austerity spending cuts if Britain’s economy continues to struggle, the International Monetary Fund has said... the economy should be stimulated with a combination of more “quantitative easing” from the Bank of England and “temporary tax cuts” for businesses and low-income households.

And now, back to our regularly scheduled shit and mirrors.

Yeah, but we HEARD the Bush Tax Cuts were a good idea ONCE ALREADY.

Objective reality -- The Bush Tax Cuts Didn't Stimulate Anything. Anyone who is proposing to continue throwing money down the toilet can be disregarded as a nitwit.

Well I guess that makes it a clear choice then... Your economic wisdom and judgment, versus the CBO and the IMF.

Did you pay attention to how a decade of the tax cuts destroyed the economy?

Really? Well damn, that's a relief. I used to think it had to do with things like the repeal of Glass-Steagall, the destruction of our manufacturing sector, and our apparently incurable penchant for engaging in budget-bleeding foreign wars. I appreciate you simplifying things for me. Just goes to show what a truly sharp mind is capable of, eh?

What do you call something which was promoted to pay off the national debt, yet we ended up with a destroyed economy?

Here's a hint. When you won't cut defense spending, you need to raise revenue. Period. End of Story.

A FISCALLY RESPONSIBLE PERSON would insist that Tax Cuts are off the table until the debt is retired.

Oh, you don't have to convince me. I think you're the smartest person on the Internet. Anybody who disagrees with you is irresponsible!

Look at it this way, when you have too many bills to pay, YOU GET A SECOND JOB. You raise revenue. You don't QUIT YOUR JOB and cut revenue.

And Dem leadership, which was nearly unanimous in saying that "You dont raise taxes in a recession". The only problem is there is no essential economic difference between raising taxes in a recession vs raising them during growth. Taxes are brakes on any economy, anyone with even the most basic understanding of economics knows that it cant be any other way.

Except Norway, for instance.
