Rule -> How to silence critical USA websites (6/8/2011 7:43:23 AM)

So how can a government, company of individual hypothetically silence a critical website?

Easy: hack the website, load it with alleged copyrighted material and next set the law on it to take it down for infringement of - alleged - intellectual property.

Its a critical site?
hardly
wheres the smidgeon of proof they hacked it and filled it full of shit they could shut it down for.
If he doesnt know what is on his site, he needs to be having a word with his hosting company
theres this handy little thing that tells you when your account was last accessed and where it came from
I dont see him accusing the govmnt for putting it there.
Conspiracy theory indeeed. Now Im not  in any way supporting ICE on this as far as due process is concerned, but truthfully this is smellier than a babys diaper

Yes...supposedly a drug based on the claims of the site selling it. Guess what, you cant advertise something as being medicinal unless the FDA approves it. The site did, the FDA hasnt.

OK, we have three possibilities, which I'll list in ascending order of probability.

1. He put the stuff up himself - I put this as the least likely because it just doesn't make any sense. the guy has an agenda, he is on a crusade, and unless the links to illegal stuff were some sort of revenue source it just doesn't make any sense.
2. He was hacked - This one is obvious, the guy has a lot of enemies.
3. It was somebody at the hosting company - They have easy access to everything and can easily cover their tracks. It may not even have been motivated by any animosity towards the guy.

Now, assuming #2 (hacked), the way I see it there are 3 possible sources of the hacking, and they are (once again in ascending order of probability):
1. The Government - I just don't see any real reason for the Gvt to take that sort of chance. the guy just isn't that important, or that big of a threat...who besides anti-vaccine nuts have ever heard of him before today?
2. Big Pharma - Much more likely, but again, the guy just isn't worth the risk, he's a minor annoyance at best, a pinprick. They call it BIG Pharma for a reason.
3. Independent Hacker - This is the most likely culprit, possibly just an attempt to share illegal stuff, but most likely a deliberate attempt against him. The reason i say its the most likely is as follows. The lone hacker (or small group) is the most likely to take the risk, he doesn't have strategy groups and think tanks to weigh the risks, and if he/she/they has some sort of grudge, he/she/they are on a crusade of their own, and crusaders very often will disregard the law happily to score a win.

So, my analysis...some guy at the hosting company with a grudge against him, and odds are nobody will ever figure out just who.

Not quite Lucy, as I mentioned in my reply to Rule, an appropriately skilled insider at the hosting company could insert files and links and leave no trace as far as when, where, or how. In fact they could fuck with the logs so it looks like the guy has been uploading the files and links from his home PC all along.

And any decent hacker can spoof them as well. I'm not a hacker by any definition of the word, but I know enough about networking and stuff to make it damn near impossible for you to figure out who I am or where I sent something from. IP tracking can very easily be fooled. I'm sure any half-competent hacker or knowledgeable network geek can confirm this for you.

Here endeth today's lesson. [:D]

Upon reflection, switch these two around...it would take just the right combination of people on the inside to pull it off, and that always makes things less likely when you require that people in several key positions be involved....so hacking is the most likely.

Which makes the most likely culprit an independent hacker or hacker group with a grudge.

Lucylastic -> RE: How to silence critical USA websites (6/8/2011 1:17:43 PM)

If the hacker was inside the hosting company, yeah, of course. but all the owner of the site has to do is prove that he didnt access his account to prove it wasnt him that put up all the questionable files
it will take time for him to get it back.
Ive had my site hacked and while he didnt leave a good trail, they did get him.
id go for someone with a grudge for sure.

Or you can just buy it if you have enough money, that's what the right usually does.
