ORIGINAL: BonesFromAsh "Do what you love...and the money will follow" I'm curious to here from folks who've chosen to take those words to heart. Tell us your story and share a bit of inspiration. I agree, but you also have to know what you want and then follow a reasonable plan. You'll have to adapt your love to the needs around you, and you'll need to think of your talents and abilities in the broadest sense. I majored in music performance, not even hedging my bet with education. I was encouraged to do it and let life sort itself out later. The benefit? I focused on excellence, and achieving it in one area opened the doors in other areas. After struggling in a poor economy, I got jobs in music wholesale. My writing skills and managerial skills were noted, and I used these areas to advance, adding to my education with much additional independent study (which I enjoyed). I had also worked in finance, and all this together coalesced into a business career and a free lance business writing practice. I ran some outfits, some non-profits, some cooperative start-ups, and earned a name for myself as a good promoter and for my ability to come in and turn a place around. I was also performing all over the state for multiple organizations. I had to slow down. I cut back on the music to the ones I really wanted to do--and found I made more money doing less, and noted the lesson carefully. I started a business consulting practice, and promoted it through a weekly business column. I also wrote several free lance pieces nationally. But I was running around all the time, and I wasn't really happy with what I was doing. Local colleges contacted me and asked me to teach music courses. I didn't really want to, but felt I should give back--and found I was both good at it and liked it. So I did it more and more. Eventually, I was asked to teach professional writing full time, and took the opportunity to slow down a bit and settle in. I still play, I still write, and I work with clients here and there, but mainly I focus on the land I bought decades ago, and tree by tree, plant by plant, it became a large forest surrounding orchards, vineyards, berry patches and gardens. I'm thinking about getting into presenting seminars. But the key factor will be "Is this something I will enjoy doing?" If not, I'll find something else more fun to do instead. And while you're doing that, also remember--make a difference. Sincerely helping people is the key to success, financial and otherwise. One more thing--remember to save, right from the start. A small amount consistently set aside will grow to a comfortable nest egg. Don't ever say you can't afford it. Good luck to you.
