Do I love my job?? Hmmm.. Yes. I really do. Before I started personal training I came from an office and I was miserable. Being nothing more then a 9-5 desk jockey made me want to bludgeon myself. I had to get out. I cant describe the feeling I get every time a client has reached a milestone or a goal and I know I helped with that. It's pretty awesome :). I wont lie its not always fun. Sometimes waking up at 4:30am to train a client at 5am isn't my idea of a party. It sucks even more so when said client conveniently forgets to put on deodorant or shower that morning. But hey its the name of the game. I make pretty decent money. Enough to support myself and pay my way through grad school without mounting debt.  It's a good living until my degree starts paying out.

"Do what you love...and the money will follow"

On the whole, I disagree.

If you do what you love, then personal satisfaction will most likely follow.  As for money, it will only come if what you do is valued by others.

What advice do I give my children?

If you seek only personal satisfaction and do not care about wealth, then do what you love.  If money concerns you, then seek work that others value.  If possible, find a way to make what you love be of value to others.  But whatever it is that you do, find something to love about it and allow that love to drive you to be the best you can be.

I can honestly say that in my lifetime I have never held a job that I didn't find a way to love and have pride in.  I have held a great variety of different types of positions... from waitress to soldier to epitaxial deposition operator to caterer to tax collector to human resources manager to my current business that I own with Firm which is in an engineering/regulatory field.  Each position has held challenges to embrace and given me opportunity to grow.  While not every one was in a high paying field, I can say that for the time I performed each, I earned the respect of my employers and was rewarded.

"Do what you love...and the money will follow"

I'm curious to here from folks who've chosen to take those words to heart. Tell us your story and share a bit of inspiration.

I agree, but you also have to know what you want and then follow a reasonable plan. You'll have to adapt your love to the needs around you, and you'll need to think of your talents and abilities in the broadest sense.

I majored in music performance, not even hedging my bet with education. I was encouraged to do it and let life sort itself out later. The benefit? I focused on excellence, and achieving it in one area opened the doors in other areas.

After struggling in a poor economy, I got jobs in music wholesale. My writing skills and managerial skills were noted, and I used these areas to advance, adding to my education with much additional independent study (which I enjoyed). I had also worked in finance, and all this together coalesced into a business career and a free lance business writing practice. I ran some outfits, some non-profits, some cooperative start-ups, and earned a name for myself as a good promoter and for my ability to come in and turn a place around. I was also performing all over the state for multiple organizations. I had to slow down.

I cut back on the music to the ones I really wanted to do--and found I made more money doing less, and noted the lesson carefully. I started a business consulting practice, and promoted it through a weekly business column. I also wrote several free lance pieces nationally. But I was running around all the time, and I wasn't really happy with what I was doing.

Local colleges contacted me and asked me to teach music courses. I didn't really want to, but felt I should give back--and found I was both good at it and liked it. So I did it more and more. Eventually, I was asked to teach professional writing full time, and took the opportunity to slow down a bit and settle in. I still play, I still write, and I work with clients here and there, but mainly I focus on the land I bought decades ago, and tree by tree, plant by plant, it became a large forest surrounding orchards, vineyards, berry patches and gardens.

I'm thinking about getting into presenting seminars. But the key factor will be "Is this something I will enjoy doing?" If not, I'll find something else more fun to do instead.

And while you're doing that, also remember--make a difference. Sincerely helping people is the key to success, financial and otherwise.

One more thing--remember to save, right from the start. A small amount consistently set aside will grow to a comfortable nest egg. Don't ever say you can't afford it.

Good luck to you.

when i do what i love, working with horses who have issues or producing a show horse then i'm in my true elements and i have the potential to earn alot of money. unfortunately alot of the people who come to me for help do so because they have bought cheap horses and been ripped off by other people. so what do i do....say no because they can't afford me and the horse continues to suffer, or do i help out the horse and owner to have a better life, but at my exspence? alot of the time it's that latter, but i feel better that i do it when others won't.

i used to also be a full time professional artist doing mainly portrait work of animals and people. i loved it and it brings good money, but then i had to give up the horses as i didn't have time for them. so happy medium.....work only through word of mouth and keep the horses. i shall be painting, hopefully, again this year as i've taken some time off. but i have several horses, a dobby, and a bull to do so need to get cracking.

the job i do now is ok and i like alot of the people, but it's not really my thing. it brings regular money that really isn't enough for what we do, but it is a job which is more than alot have at the moment.

I am a librarian and I absolutely love it. I work for a library system that respects its employees, pays us well and gives us wonderful benefits (and fringe benefits). I love getting up for work everyday. I love the staff I supervise. Basically, I love my job and make a very sufficient amount doing it. I have no complaints..........luci

When I first met Master he was working in the motorbike industry. He worked in a small company and the owner of the company was a very difficult person to work for. I never realised the effect the attmosphere in the company was having on him until the day he walked out. Suddenly I was living with a different person.

Master had recently bought a particular car and he was disappointed to find that there were no companies here providing decent upgrades or services for that car. So he started to take on the work himself. Now we run the UKs only dedicated specialist for that model of car. He loves what he does and is even happy to open up the workshop on weekends for customers and will spend time in the evenings on the phone giving advice.

The business is successful because it is obvious to customers that he loves what he does and that he loves the particular model we specialise in. The aim of the company has always been to provide the best service and not to make huge amounts of money. We have enough to live on and have a nice life but more importantly we love going to work every day.
