Jali's recent post about buying books online got me to thinking about the web sites I use to save myself money and the ones I know about but haven't gotten around to using much. I thought I'd share those web sites here and see if anyone else has suggestions for other money-saving web sites.

(1) ADVICE CATEGORY
I find these web sites useful for getting advice (and even providing links where you can get even more advice):
http://frugalliving.about.com/ -- I've gotten good advice from this one http://www.cheapskatemonthly.com/default.asp -- I found a lot of good advice here (2) ONLINEThese sites provide coupons and information on saving money online (I haven't gotten around to visiting them much -- they just look useful, primarily because they've got online coupons you can use):
http://www.currentcodes.com/ http://www.dealcatcher.com/ http://www.dealhunting.com/ (3) CAR BUYINGThese sites seem to be useful. I've been using them a bit in looking for a car recently:
Car listings sites that seem to be useful (I've used them a bit recently): http://www.autotrader.com/ http://www.edmunds.com/ http://www.nadaguides.com/home.aspx?l=1&w=28&p=0&f=5000 http://wsf.carfax.com/cfm/general_check.cfm?partner=edm_g (4) MY PERSONAL FAVORITES
http://www.wow-coupons.com/index.phpGo to "Retail" and when you get to the bottom of that new web page, go to the bottom and hit the "all listings" button and you get a long list of retail coupons. http://www.ebates.com/This one is an interesting site. Its magazine deals, if you do some browsing around in them, seem to be much better than you can find just about anywhere else. You can use this site's rebate program ON TOP of any rebates you can get from your credit cards, and ON TOP of any coupons you use, and ON TOP of any discounts you get at these stores, so the savings can add up. Often they may only save you a few percent, but if you're doing Christmas shopping for example, it can add up.  With any money-saving scheme there are usually two things you have to do: spend a little extra time and spend a little extra care in making sure to either follow the rebate/coupon rules or take the extra steps. If you're making a bundle of money and especially if you're doing it by spending a lot of time at work, then any complicated money-saving tips are probably not worth your while. If you're a stay-at-home mom with a flexible schedule, and you can afford to set aside a little time and if it's important to save money, then it's worth it. And if you're short on funds and have the energy and the discipline, it's definitely worth it. What Web sites do YOU use to save money?

Yahoo Travel.  If you can be flexible by a day or two on your travelling dates, when looking for airfare, DON'T enter the exact dates you think you want to travel.  Check the "My dates are flexible" option.  You are given the rock-bottom fares in lowest to highest order.  It takes a bit of time and effort, and the dates can be limiting, but if you persevere, you might be able to find a great airfare by leaving the day before or after when you want to go. You might get lucky and find fares for the exact days you want to go.  The trick is NOT to enter exact dates.

Also, check nearby airports.  Philadelphia departures, for example, always seem to be higher, but Newark and Baltimore (especially Baltimore) have given me some great bargains.  I've flown to Europe twice recently for well under $400 round-trip each time, and Baltimore to San Antonio for $200 even, just a couple months ago.  And when searching earlier this week, I found the amazing fare of $113 round-trip from Baltiimore to Cleveland, for the exact dates I wanted.

Here are four Web sites that search out the best online bookseller for you (for a particular book). I'm familiar with the first one and find it useful, but here are three more I found in a quick web search:

http://www.bestwebbuys.com/books/

http://www.addall.com/

http://www.cheapestbookprice.com/

http://www.allbookstores.com/

For those in Canada there is www.save.ca. They're like the coupons site you mentioned above but rather than  printing them yourself you select the ones you want, enter your name and address and they mail them out to you the next day. Which reminds me, I need more coupons for shampoo

My favorite is www.freecycle.org  I can't believe some of the things people are willing to give away. You just sign up for your local area and can have new posts emailed to you to make it easy. Some of the things i've seen on there are cars, working computers, lots of furniture, clothes, exercise equipment, plants, actually just about anything. The purpose of the site is to keep things our of our landfills.

My absolute favorite is www.shopgoodwill.com . Such a good site.  It's like E-Bay, but it's bidding on things from Goodwills around the country.  I bought a real suede skirt and nice jacket from there for $2.00 (plus five for shipping).

In terms of food, I love a site that isn't built to save me money, but does anyway.  It's www.allrecipes.com .  It has this nifty ingredient search feature where you can look for recipes made with whatever you have left in your kitchen.  I use it all the time.  Leftover egg noodles, tomato soup and cottage cheese?  No problem.

Other than that, I love my online bill payments.  Almost all my bills are payable on the internet, so it saves me time and stamp money.  I use one stamp every three months or so now.
