Intelligent debate died quite a while ago. The majority of the population is not intelligent,they might listen to the biased media once in a while but they only listen to what they want to hear. We get lovely soundbites every now and again which scare us or build us up but we don't know what is really going on. Polititions want to be elected or re-elected so they will say what they need to say to get that job done. I am sure most presidents/prime ministers started their political careers with the best of intentions but to get to the top they have to suck so much cock and make so many deals that by the time they get there all their good intentions have been eroded. How much money is the next American election going to cost? How indebted is the next president going to be to industry/media etc by the time he or she gets there? It doesn't matter how much intellectual debate there is, not enough people will listen or care.
