Hi folks -
I'm looking to order a book about Jefferson... I've thought about it for some time.  I've done some research and can't decide. Anyone have a suggestion?  It's not like I can run down to Border's where I am.  It's a considerable expense, so let me be kind of clear what I'm looking for.

I'd like something kind of easy to read.  Think... And the Band Played On... something that makes the HUMAN aspect bring the dry facts to life. I'd like something a bit more analytical too... think something like Emotional Intelligence or Guns, Germs, and Steel.

I DON'T want something that says "rah rah - he was GREAT!".  I want something that's honest about his foibles as well as his successes.  I don't want something that says "BLECH, he was dreadful."  He changed the world, after all.  I'd like something a balanced.

Any suggestions?
Thanks,
sunshine
(and I'm off to work now, so I won't be posting again probably until tomorrow.)

I hope you find one I think the most approachable as a reader would be Fawn Brodie's "Thomas Jefferson; An Intimate History"

Brodie is in the Hemmings camp as far as a possible relationship with Jefferson , which is in line with some of the more political leanings of Modern Jefferson Bios but otherwise, she does a very good
job at humanizing the man. I think she is spot on with her analysis of the Jefferson/Hamilton feud. That said.... she doesn't give a whole lot to his political areas, more its a biography of the man.

Jefferson may be the most flawed great man in our Nation's history.

I couldn't agree more with your choice. Without a doubt, the best I have read.

Brodie is in the Hemmings camp as far as a possible relationship with Jefferson ,

Possible???
The DNA has shown it to be a fact and the jefferson family has acknowledged the hemming's family and accepted them as family.

which is in line with some of the more political leanings of Modern Jefferson Bios

Are you denying the public statements of the jefferson family on this matter?

No, the DNA has only shown a member of the Jefferson family fathered the Hemmings children. Jefferson left no direct male son and as such, there was no positive control for the DNA testing. The DNA only shows that Jefferson could have fathered one or some or even none of the Hemmings children. Their father could have also been Randolf Jefferson not to mention one of Jefferson's Carr's nephews from his sister.

So the answer to your last question is, yes.

Why does it bother you so much that white thomas jefferson had sex with his wife's black sister?

Why do you assume it bothers me?

I am sure you want it to bother me but that's your hang up not mine.

Amazing.  I ask for a book suggestion, and y'all start quarreling.  Thank goodness I didn't ask for something quarrel-worthy.

Fatdomdaddy recomends a book to you but claims it is inaccurate...
I recomend the same book because I believe it is accurate...
thus the disagreement.

I've read 4 and the one that seemed most accurate and rang truest with the Smithsonian record is "Thomas Jefferson: A Life"

If one is interested in getting a good picture of the man and his times, breadth as well as depth are necessary.
