I have one of those boxes on the side of My commercial building and the firemen have a key to the box.

I save on My insurance because of this.

There is nothing valuable inside a real estate brokers office.

Except 4 computers, Agent's laptops, furniture, a $12,000 copier, etc etc etc.

Seriously, hunky, sometimes I think you play ignorant and sometimes I think it's real.

Oooohhh... imagine all those jewelry stores and electronics stores and banks.  With keys handy right on the outside of the building!

Nahhh... absolutely no one would ever be tempted to try to use them illegally.  No one knows where Cedar Falls, IA is, anyway.  [;)]

The man made the same comment. I dont know how easily they can be picked.

It's probably easy, after you rip it off the wall with a crowbar. Of course, that will work as a key on most doors, anyway.

I'd join the revolution if they were requiring them on individual residences (just go ahead and kick the door in, if you have to), but I can see this. How many businesses worth robbing rely on nothing but a lock for security, anyway?

You should be glad you don't base your business out of your home.  [:D]

For sure.  Even a hardware store would have more valuables then a real estate office.   A few outdated computers are hazzardous waste items that one has to pay to dispose of.

And then theres the matter of the misleading subject line saying "All residents".

In that I agree. I was going with the idea that it was all residences.

Under the code, people of Cedar Falls would need to provide keys to their commercial properties like businesses, apartments and even some rental spaces. The keys would be available in lock boxes so emergency crews and law enforcement could access the building in an emergency without breaking down the door.

It sounds more like it will be to buildings that are vulnerable to being left unoccupied, especally for long periods of time or at night. No where does it state residencies.

Vacation rentals are often furnished. Vandalism is a great cost to both property owners and insurance companies. An alarm goes off and the FD has to wait for the owner to show up unless they see smoke or fire.

We have had an uptick of govt workers in my area-  embezzling funds...  people you never would have thought to do so.

I sure would not want any of them with a key to anything that I own.

Brain -> RE: City Government demands all keys to properties belonging to Cedar Falls residents (6/13/2011 9:25:06 PM)

I think this is more important. I think they are trying to find out how far they can expand their power.
At least the city is trying to protect in case of a fire.

FBI Bestowing More Snooping Power to Agents, Testing Privacy Boundaries

Charlie Savage has an excellent but disturbing story in this morning's New York Times about the encroaching powers of the FBI, in the form of a new set of guidelines for agents performing investigations, with loosened restrictions that have alarmed privacy advocates for very good reasons. Emphases are ours:

Under the new rules, agents will be allowed to search such databases without having to tell anyone. This is brilliant if you are an agent and happen to notice a nice looking person you might like to ask out.

PA's thread title was simply misleading.  [8|]

Yup.  It implied that it applied to ALL properties in Cedar Falls, when in fact it's only commercial and industrial buildings.

NeedToUseYou -> RE: City Government demands all keys to properties belonging to Cedar Falls residents (6/13/2011 10:01:21 PM)

So, if I'm understanding correctly.

The city wants to put box that contain keys to business, apartments, and industrial facilities, in a lock box, and these lock boxes all work with one key, and that key is in possession of the fire department. So, essentially, if I wanted to rob any business, all I have to do is get one key? So, for every business in town, many apartments, and every industrial facility to be completely open to me, I just need to get one key made. LOL.

Oh, yeah, that's safe, so, essentially, you just have to tear one box off a building, don't even try to rob the place then, take it to a crooked lock smith and he'll make you a key for the box, then you can have an advantage in robbing any business in the city. Just unlock the door. Want to break into an apartment, just wait outside for them to leave, you don't even have to kick the door in, it's open. Want to steal some toxic chemicals just scout around the industrial section of town, until you spot one that has what you want.

Anyway, sounds like a single point of failure system. Even if each lock box had a different code or something, it'd still be a bad idea to store your keys in an obvious place. Like stores for example, the employees get there before the store opens, they then lock the doors while they prepare to open. Well, the security is disabled, and there would be no real customer traffic to deter thieves. So, you get this key you wait for the store manager to enter, and disable the alarm, the you simply enter the building, robbing it.

Unless this "system" is more thought out than the article or video showed (didn't show much), it seems foolish.

We have such a box on both entrances to our apartment building, Treasure. Since we moved in, the FD has been out three times, twice with a false alarm, and a third time when a lady had a stroke while she was cooking and the bottom floor filled up with smoke.

Dont know too many key places who make those type of keys. But, I suppose it could be done. But, immediately, who would be the first suspects?

....And what the city council and mayor have not told the public is the location of the 'master' key: At the end of this hallway.

So not only does your landlord have a key- the entire city staff can get into your individual apartment?

That certainly is not ok with me.  In the 14 years that I rented- I did not let the landlord have a key.

It isnt asinine, its a good idea. Id rather have a lock box availble to the FD than have them break the doors or glass just to find out if theres a problem. We dont own our building but building management and our alarm company both have keys, and they are located within a minute of the office and would beat the FD there anyway.

Wonderful.  It is a procedure that you don't mind and see as beneficial.  It has worked well for you.

We ought to make it into law and force everyone to use it, too.  [8|]

pahunkboy -> RE: City Government demands all keys to properties belonging to Cedar Falls residents (6/14/2011 6:19:54 AM)

Right- the rub is not that some may want to do this- but that it is mandatory and makes the noncompliance a criminal- finable matter.
