an excellent cast of young talent with some familiar faces. A mixture of music, laughter and alternative life styles blended into a film that makes us smile.
Kevin gives it two thumbs up...pass the popcorn!
Just thought I'd share.

Well.... Its no La Boheme, that's for sure...[8D]

Actually I thought the movie was far better than the stage production...being able to use closeups and other devices made each individual character more relevant than squinting at a bunch of actors on a stage.

As far as poor old Andrew Lloyd Weber's works go, I'll just opine that he jumped the shark after JCS. And the less said about Moulin Rouge the better...

Can't go wrong with the classics tho,

West Side Story

My Fair Lady

The Inspector General

The Producers (the original).

As a currently 'closeted' thespian, every so often I'll listen to the 'Broadway' channel on digital cable, it would be easier to identify the musicals I didn't like. 'Cat's' because of the simple redundancy of the melody. I always thought this play ran on Broadway for as long as it did because only tourists went to it. When I lived in St. Louis for 5 years, that theory bore true because every time someone came back from NYC one or the first questions they were asked was; "Did you see Cats?" The other one I hated was 'Starlight Express'; which could be used to illustrate the same point as the old anti-drug commercial using a fried egg. You can have the first example of 'Jesus Christ Superstar' compared to 'Starlight Express' and have the narrator say; "This is Andrew Lloyd Weber's brain ('Superstar'). This is Andrew Lloyd Weber's brain on acid (Starlight Express)."

Two of the less popular musicals I love are; "Nine" and "Follies". Nine because it had Italian undertones. It was inspired by Fellini's movie "8 1/2" and stared Raul Julia and then Tommy Tune back in 1982. I missed the recent revival, but based upon the reviews, I didn't miss anything. Follies is one of Sondheim's lesser know works. Although a very interesting story and Sondheim opera style lyrics it didn't last long on Broadway. I think my love for it derives from playing "Buddy" in a 'way off' Broadway production a 'life-time' ago.

I can't believe you've all forgotten CABARET! If you've never seen it I'd suggest it to anyone! But see it live because no matter how much I love Liza, live is just better.

And points to Arpig for mentioning Hedwig and the Angry Inch!

Littlepita -> RE: Musicals....Fastlane's pick (5/15/2006 5:38:12 PM)

I have to agree with everyone's choices. Musicals are awesome. I adore My Fair Lady, Chicago, A Chorus Line, and of course Grease was my movie!

MrMister -> RE: Musicals....Fastlane's pick (5/15/2006 5:45:32 PM)

I was beginning to wonder if anyone was going to mention Chicago. That was pretty awesome. As was Phantom of the Opera, Les Mis, Rent, Cats, West Side Story, oh well, the list does go on and on doesn't it.

gooddogbenji -> RE: Musicals....Fastlane's pick (5/15/2006 5:51:04 PM)

I saw Chicago on Broadway a few years ago, and was not impressed at all.  But that's just me.

There are no in-between musicals. They are either great or their creators should be shot, but only after extensive torture.

GREAT MUSICALS:

No, let me correct that, I mean

GREAT MUSICALS
That's better. Here are some:

My Fair Lady (perhaps the best of all time)
Annie Get Your Gun (heavenly)
Chicago (sexiest musical I've ever seen, far better than the movie)
West Side Story (I just love singing "I Feel Pretty" in falsetto, doesn't everyone?)
Producers (probably the worst of the great ones, but it has energy)
Rocky Horror Picture Show (I like it even though I don't like it. It's that good.)
Little Shop of Horrors (ditto)
I haven't seen Wicked, never saw Hedwig or the Angry Inch, but I strongly suspect they'd make the list too.
Anything Goes
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum
Fiddler on the Roof ("IF I were a rich man ...")
Oklahoma!

Look, if they've got a few songs that you just can't get out of your head afterward, you gotta believe that the Angels in Heaven are still filling the house somewhere up above and the music is wafting down into your soul.

Dustyn -> RE: Musicals....Fastlane's pick (5/15/2006 10:34:37 PM)

Calamity Jane (Doris Day and Howard Keel)
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (Jane Powell and Howard Keel)
My Fair Lady (Audrey Heburn and Rex Harrison)
RHPS (Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Brian Bosworth)
Victor, Victoria (James Gardner and Julie Andrews)
Sound of Music (Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer)
The King and I (Yul Brenner and Deborah Kerr)

Just a few from my personal library.  Other include Grease, Oklahoma, Showboat, Kismet, Hello Dolly, Yankee Doodle Dandy...

Do a search for Rodgers and Hammerstein on Yahoo.

ArtCatDom -> RE: Musicals....Fastlane's pick (5/16/2006 12:40:15 AM)

Carmen by far is the best ever!! (Yes, yes I know it's an "opera" and not a "musical". Whatever though, I love Bizet!)

For "actual" musicals I especially like Rocky Horror, Hedwig and Les Mis.

I despised Rent.

On the ever-popular Weber, it's very very much hit or miss for me.

*meow*

Chaingang -> RE: Musicals....Fastlane's pick (5/16/2006 1:03:32 AM)

The Car Man
Hedwig
Hair
Rocky Horror
All That Jazz
Chicago
How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying
Sweet Charity
Brigadoon
Fiddler on the Roof
The Threepenny Opera

allyC -> RE: Musicals....Fastlane's pick (5/16/2006 2:54:49 AM)

The first musical I ever saw was Fiddler on the Roof with Zero Mostel.  I was a little girl but I remember it like it was yesterday.  [sm=boohoo.gif] I also saw Man of La Mancha with Yul Brynner a few weeks later.  I only remember that I loved that one too!   As far as live, on stage, I would say my favorites are Jesus Christ Superstar, RENT, and Fiddler on the Roof.  (I really did like Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Phantom a lot too!) Movie musicals - my all time favorite would have to be Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (or ANYTHING else with Howard Keel) -Cav's ally
