GOP Funding Bill Cuts Assistance To Low-Income Women, While Ensuring Maintenance Of Azalea Collection

http://appropriations.house.gov/UploadedFiles/6.13.11_FY_12_Agriculture_Conference_Summary.pdf

This week, the House plans to vote on the fiscal year 2012 Agriculture appropriations bill, which provides funding to, among other agencies, the Department of Agriculture, the Food and Drug Administration, and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission

House Republicans have been crowing that this bill cuts agriculture funding by nearly $3 billion from last year’s level, and is coming in $5 billion below President Obama’s 2012 budget request.

Evidently, the House GOP finds nutrition assistance for low-income women and their children to be a “lower priority program,” as the bill cuts the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) to such an extent that 325,000 to 475,000 currently eligible women and children will be denied help.

– MAINTAINING NATIONAL AZALEA COLLECTION: “The Committee directs the National Arboretum to maintain its National Boxwood Collection and the Glenn Dale Hillside portion of the Azalea Collection. The Committee encourages the National Arboretum to work collaboratively with supporters of the National Arboretum to raise additional funds to ensure the long-term viability of these and other important collections.” [Pg. 13]

And your surprised by this Lucy? Since when has the GOP ever give a damn about the poorest and most vulnerable Americans? Likewise, I find it amusing actually that Republicans are bitching about spending cuts. Weren't they the ones just a few weeks ago bitching about spending cut for 'this' and 'that'? I would think they'd be happy to have spending cuts; since they are the ones championing them.

– ENSURING THAT THE ANIMAL WELFARE ACT DOESN’T APPLY TO MOVIE SETS: “While the Animal Welfare Act’s intent is to establish minimally acceptable standards in the treatment of animals in research, exhibition, transport, and by dealers, the law was not aimed at regulating companion animals used as extras in the background of movies and television productions. The Committee urges the agency to use the Secretary’s discretionary authority to seek alternative means of meeting its statutory mandate, including the option of issuing exemptions or master exhibitor licenses to these pet owners.” [Pg. 19]

I wonder if this is a sign that the screenplay I wrote for John Lithgow is actively being consider it's called "Kill all those fucking pugs down the street" ... heh... and I thought it was too personal; and one dimensional for Hollywood to pick up on it. Thought I was going to have to take it to BallyWood (AGAIN!)

These are the same people that when it came to cutting defense spending it was taken out of things like body armor and veterans benefits....but paying for things like mercenary armies under no one's control at 4 times the rate we would pay one of our GIs

Color me unsurprised

Lucylastic -> RE: Cutting assistance, but keeping up the azaleas (6/14/2011 11:23:23 AM)

Not surprised unfortunatley Joe
Just pointing out that low income, unemployed, under employed, the young and their parents, the sick the poor are being shafted and considered to be less worthy than flowring plants
Someones greased the slope with astroglide.
Not to mention the animals in movies? wha? so they are back to shooting horses?

Stern I adore John Lithgow....jus tsayin

In terms of absolute numbers how do Maintenance Of Azalea Collection and the financial aid to low income women compare?

I think the point is priorities, and the republicans make their priorities known by cutting spending on things that are not really contributing to our debt problem (WIC, which is an agricultural subsidy that also helps women and children), and keeping another program that will not really impact our debt, which is the care of azaleas.

The amount of money we spend on social programs like WIC and foodstamps is a dribble in the bucket compared with defense spending, which really does nothing for our people.

I think azaleas are great floweers, my mums favourites and remind me of many wonderful mothers days.
when it comes down to the food needs of the poor, there is no contest

My great grandmother was named Azalea, but we can't eat them

tazzygirl -> RE: Cutting assistance, but keeping up the azaleas (6/14/2011 11:41:49 AM)

Obviously more expensive than the lives of children.

Comparison...

Some of the largest cuts would be borne by WIC, which provides nutritional support for women and infants, cut by $747 million, and training and employment grants to the states, ticketed for a $1.4-billion reduction.

.......

The agencies and programs in this bill will receive a total of $125.5 billion in both discretionary and
mandatory funding, a reduction of more than $7 billion from the President’s request. Discretionary
funding is reduced by $2.7 billion from last year’s level – a cut of over $5 billion from the President’s
request. However, mandatory (automatic) funding in the bill increases by $3 billion over last year to a
total of $108 billion, and equals more than 86% of the total funding in the bill.

Lucylastic -> RE: Cutting assistance, but keeping up the azaleas (6/14/2011 11:47:59 AM)

Only if they painted them green and planted them in pots
