SternSkipper -> Any Skateboard Enthusiasts Here? (6/14/2011 3:42:09 PM)

I know this is probably a long shot. But my son just finished sixth grade with the highest GPA for all sixth graders in the city (Must be that liberal mind poisoning his old man's been doing to him).
Anyway, I want to buy him a gift to commemorate another year of academic breakthroughs. I know he wants either a kayak (which is a vessel, so I am all set on what to get him if that's what he picks), or a longboard skateboard.
Now when I was a kid in the 70s, the only long boards were called slalom boards and they sucked big fat ones and we stuck to shorty Tom Overlins and stuff like that. Now, I crack open the browser and SHIT it's easier buying a car.
Can anybody recommend a good bottom dollar website to shop for a good bamboo/fibre longboard and perhaps a few words of buyer's advice to ease the shopping process?

I will try and get the info for you from the Man. He had the same experience with the long vs short recently. He's travelling today so I don't know if it will be today, but I will ask.

I wish I had a clue. Fortunately, or unfortunately as the case may often be........ my grandsons jumped right into two wheels, then two wheels with motors. My son was all about skateboarding but that was 10ish years ago. I was never able to ride one......grace and co-ordination are not my strongest points.

Two of my grandsons are competitve skateboarders. I'll ask them when they get their lazy, summer vacation behinny's outta bed.

No advice but your son is probably awesome!

It's interesting to me how skateboarding is the activity that the cultural vanguard always seems to flock to. Back in the day punk rockers especially on the West Coast were all about skating and now the underground hip hop community has embraced the activity especially guys like the Odd Future posse and Curren$y. So it sounds like your son is probably smart, hip, and exuberant and those are three ingredients necessary to have an awesome life! Plus he obviously has an old man who thinks the world of him which sure as heck helps.

Oh, while I'm waiting, you should ask your son if he's interested in the new rip-stick. (about $80)

It's an inline skateboard, really cool and unique in both the way it looks and the way it rides. I understand is all the rage among the wheel set.

Is that the twisty one? I've seen them around also.

Thanks GT ... it's been a cool week in father land.... We started Saturday. JBoy got two trophies at the Town soccer awards cookout. Bear in mind that he never touched a soccer ball for the purpose of playing a game, till the team came up short for the season on the B team 6 weeks ago. His friends and the coach Dad brought it up when we hiked up Tuckerman's Ravine the weekend before actual games started (I mean, he's kicked em around and stuff). Low on oxygen and feeling old, I agreed.
He got the most improved for his team and highest scorer of the season. The the report card comes ... what a great week.
Thanks for sharing the fruits of parental pride with me. Not get back up there!
[:D]

Actually no, that's called something else... and I'll be damned if I can remember what they're called... Nah... looks like I am going to spend more than I did on his surfboard. But he sure as hell earned it.

He surfs .... so he wants a longboard... But HEY LaTigress ... that's what you were referring to... Thanks Bita ... Yeah, I doubt i am getting off the hook for under 2 bills. He's talking about Bamboo composites now.
I just hope i can stop the bleeding before he's inviting Sean White to go shopping with us[:D]

Funny you should frame it that way... I was like the Deadhead in a big group of purple velvet undergrounders who skated [:D]

He's really Hip Dapper... And he's having a good run He is only twelve and he already is handy at Rock Climbing, Sailing, Soccer, Mountain Biking, and he ain't a bad fisherman. Around Christmas, he teacher (HOTTTTTTTT) flagged me down in the super market and started telling me what a joy he was to have in her class and how he and his best friend John sit together an lead the pack and how she can easily see him at MIT in 7 years... Picture a scorching hot blonde, probably all of 25 telling saying stuff like that to you ... She coulda got me hard if we talked another two minutes... And hearing that was better than her talking FILTHY to me[:D]

Anyway, GAME 7 Stanley Cup! Gotta Go.
Peace

my vote is for the hyper-carve. in my opinion, it's the best longboard at the $150 price point and a lot better than a bunch that are way more expensive. i don't own the hyper-carve, but i paid way more for my board than you want to. quality for price, i think this is your best bet by far. it gives a nice ride.
