I see nothing wrong with how it went down. You have no way of knowing why he was so erratic, crazy hopped up on dope or something, or having a medical issue. I am just glad he wasn't hurt.

Hypoglecemia is most often mistaken for somebody being drunk, and as you lose a hundred points or so off your iq when it kicks in, you don't really want somebody in that condition driving. The taser seems a bit excessive, but as they couldn't tell he was diabetic, rather than mean drunk, it's an understandable mistake.

So what should we do? Shock anyone and everyone that's acting a little funny?

There was a story on the news a while back where a guy who was at a mental health clinic was tasered to death cause the cops thought he was too erratic.

My brother is a Detective for a Sheriff department in Florida and has often commented that it was more or less joked about as funny to taser someone. It was the norm as far as he could tell.

Acting erratic doesn't necessarily mean aggressiveness. And for all we know..Their idea of aggressiveness might have been raising your voice. Then you have the possibility of a cop lying to cover his ass..not like that last thing happens really.

At least they didn't kill him.

Agreed.   I cant believe how flippant people are.   Tazers are lethal force.  Do you think I can get on an airplane with one?   Try it.  Try it.

Some people on this very thread should be tased.

Using a cattle prod on a human is cruel.   It is funny until someone pokes an eye out- as long as it is someone else.    What a broken down excuse for humanity the cheer leaders are.

Everyone here will always be 100% capable of functioning in their body.    Rather smug that some think they will never be the guy who had the diabetic shock.

A sad commentary on humanity... that this is ok.

So because there are those of us with a differing opinion than yours, pahunk, we 'should be tased' ?

A sad commentary on humanity.

That's great! Alas, it's too long for a sig line.

Those who think it is no big deal to tase others-  yeah.  For sure.   And I dont mean at the recipients time of choice.....

DomImus -> RE: Police Tase Driver Suffering From Diabetic Shock (6/15/2011 6:54:45 PM)

My boss where I used to work had a pretty sever case of diabetes. I have been around him a few times when he was 'tripping'. Without knowing any different I would have thought the same things that those cops were thinking. You're wrong on this one, hunky.

pahunkboy -> RE: Police Tase Driver Suffering From Diabetic Shock (6/15/2011 6:59:38 PM)

^  Still it is no excuse.    None.

barelynangel -> RE: Police Tase Driver Suffering From Diabetic Shock (6/15/2011 7:12:22 PM)

So PA, what if this was some crazed guy who was trying to get back into his car to get a gun?  pulled it out and shot an officer, a bystander?  Cops are human and in this instance they put their safety and that of the public before 1 man who they could not tell was in a medical crisis. I am glad they did.  because it could very well have saved this guys life on top of it because who knows how long it would have been before they were able to get close enough to the guy for a cop to realize what was going on.

but i guess its better to just bitch about how awful it is the guy was tasered while being aggressive, and trying to get back in to the car.  just because you know NOW that he was in diabetic shock, its easy to make judgments.  Just remember, the cops had no clue.  To second guess why a guy is doing what he is doing is a good way for cops and bystanders to get killed.

And PA, as chicken little as you are on this site, i can guarantee tha confronted with what these cops were confronted with, you would have not said, well wait a minute let's see if he is having a medical issue.  YOU as pessimistic as you are, would have automatically thought the worst of this guy if you had been confronted with his behavior.  Unless your chicken little personality in most of your posts is just a hoax on this site.

angel

OK, Hunk, here ya go.
You are a cop and get a call on someone driving erratically.

You try to pull him over and he ignores you and speeds up, crashing through a fence and nearly into someone's house.

You tell him to put his hands up, get out of the car, etc

He refuses to put his hands up, gets aggressive, starts rummaging in the car

He gets out of the car, then tries to get back in, all the while looking (and likely smelling) like he's very drunk.

If he gets back in the car, you may well have a drunk with a gun or a knife on your hands or, if the car was still running (or he could get it started), he could back it into your cruiser or off the curb and into the street.

You can't let him get back in the car.

Hint: you cannot tell just by looking at someone whether they are drunk or having a diabetic emergency. Unless you spot a medic alert bracelet, you cannot know if you are dealing with a dangerous drunk, or someone out of control due to a medical issue.

What do you, the cop, do in this situation? Let's hear from you what these cops should have done.

pahunkboy -> RE: Police Tase Driver Suffering From Diabetic Shock (6/15/2011 7:24:55 PM)

2 more people that ought to hope their bodies work exactly correct like they are supposed to and never become ill with a condition that makes you the tased just because it is inconvenient to ascertain that a disability rendered the situation.

We all age... some age more brutally then others... so the roll of the dice is on everyone here.    No one escapes getting old.

not even the cop.

WyldHrt -> RE: Police Tase Driver Suffering From Diabetic Shock (6/15/2011 7:31:33 PM)

Answer my question, Hunky. What do you, the cop do to get the situation under control?

Please also tell me how you, the cop in this situation, are going to determine that the man is diabetic rather than drunk.

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: Police Tase Driver Suffering From Diabetic Shock (6/15/2011 7:34:47 PM)

My Uncle was epileptic, but refused to take medications to control his seizures & he refused to wear an id band or any information at all on his person that identified him as an epileptic & subject to Grand Mal seizures. So one day, decades ago, he has a seizure in downtown Seattle near Skid Row. The cops get called & he ends up in the drunk tank. Because what else were they supposed to think?

My family all got up in arms because he was treated like a "common drunk", of which there are quite a few in the family. I said if he didn't want to be treated like that until they could figure out what was really going on with him, perhaps he should keep something on him that told people that he was an epileptic. But he was ashamed of his physical ailment, so he wouldn't ever tell anyone. He'd rather sit overnight in the drunk tank than tell.

If I ended up acting that erratically & a police officer was afraid of what I might be going to do next, I would expect the police officer to use whatever force is necessary. So, yeah, if it was me, it would be ok for the cop to tase me.

Owner59 -> RE: Police Tase Driver Suffering From Diabetic Shock (6/15/2011 7:35:31 PM)

Once I was quading through NY state and stopped at a bar along the trail and witnessed a guy who after drinking?!,a lot?!, went into a fucking rage like I`ve never seen.Exorcist shit this guy was doing, swinging at anyone who got near, throwing anything he could.Turns out he was in diabetic shock. After some meds he was fine.

But I would have tazed him during the fit if I were a responding cop.

pahunkboy -> RE: Police Tase Driver Suffering From Diabetic Shock (6/15/2011 7:36:28 PM)

The cop is to serve and protect.   He failed to render assistance to the man who had a medical emergency.  Not only did he fail to render assistance,  he  assaulted the man with less then lethal force.

The cop might have offered first aid.

If I had the condition- I would wear some kind of ID tag.

[sm=banghead.gif]  You'd may as well do this, Imus......at least it's not wasted effort!

WyldHrt -> RE: Police Tase Driver Suffering From Diabetic Shock (6/15/2011 8:19:53 PM)

You still haven't answered my question, Hunk.

Hunky, please perform a behindular craniectomy on yourself and listen to what people are telling you.

You have obviously never had to deal with a situation like this, but some of us have. People in the condition this man was in do not know that they are having a medical emergency and can be both unreasonable and violent. It is not their fault, but many an EMT has gone off shift with a black eye or worse after dealing with a diabetic emergency, and that is often when we know that the person is diabetic!

Which means the man was not going to drive a car.    THINK.  Someone having seizures is not physically going to get back into a car and drive it.  It can not be done while in the state of seizure.
