i think in 5 yrs time places like pc world etc will have major probs

LadyConstanze -> RE: will googlechromebooks maim pc industry (6/16/2011 8:14:22 AM)

There will always be people who think they do not want to give Google all that much info about everything they do, most people are getting more and more sensitive about their privacy concerns. I think people will become more and more aware of this, technology is becoming cheaper and cheaper but at the same time the desire for privacy is also rising.

I can take my MacBook or a laptop with me anywhere, even to places where I do not have internet connection, I can open it and work on it, people don't just use them to surf the web, they actually WORK on them, on various documents. Can you guarantee that every place will have 24/7 reliable internet access in the near future?

DavidLee44UK -> RE: will googlechromebooks maim pc industry (6/16/2011 8:18:51 AM)

the only thing i can predict is that whenever i make a post about anything the same people try to get a rise

u think im stoopid

you havent posted on off topic in awhile i come back and all over lol

have your empire

sad

LadyConstanze -> RE: will googlechromebooks maim pc industry (6/16/2011 8:31:55 AM)

Actually I was having a discussion about computers, I thought that was what you wanted? You asked a question and I replied that I don't believe it will happen and why not.

I'm working with tech on a daily basis, I'm interested in the developments. I told you why I disagree with the assumption that the GoogleChromeBooks will replace conventional computers completely, you decided to ignore that completely and play victim...

So you didn't want a discussion, you just wanted everybody to agree with you?

Would you really like an answer to that?

Maybe you should put a disclaimer underneath all your posts "Only people who agree with me should dare to reply or else I will draw the victim card, as I do not want to hear other opinions"

I'm glad you took the discussion to a new thread so we don't take the other one off topic.

Continuing our chat, you still haven't addressed the main weakness of purely cloud server based operations.   They have zero stand alone operations capability, you loose internet connection and you loose EVERY computer based operation.

What happens when broad areas loose internet like the black out that happened to the State of Hawaii last year?    What happens when China decides to reroute all web traffic through it's servers as also happened just last year?

Is it acceptable to have hospital cardiac monitoring centers, city traffic lights, 9-11 dispatch, water supply, electrical grid control/ power plant operations, etc, etc, etc. running without a stand alone capability?

How much money would it cost a company to loose all of it's computer operations and have their people doing absolutely nothing because their computers ceased to function each time they lost internet.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: will googlechromebooks maim pc industry (6/16/2011 9:55:59 AM)

I would be enchanted if there was RELIABLE access 24/7, and I think that time will come---in perhaps 20 years? I am not an expert in cloud computing, I might be optimistic in that estimate. There are so many outside influences from corporate to political holding that back.

I really do think there needs to be a standalone backup. This week my office was without internet, and while I was able to do most of my work, there were several clients that needed workarounds because I could not access their files.

LadyConstanze -> RE: will googlechromebooks maim pc industry (6/16/2011 10:05:39 AM)

Lady Hib, lots of other issues as well, I'm afraid

security is pretty bad

"Obviously, with all your data being available into the cloud, in one place, available 24/7 through a fast Internet link, this will be a goldmine for cybercriminals. All that is necessary here is to get hold of the authentication tokens required to access the cloud account," Raiu said.

With a normal computer you will have a backup and possibly some hard copy or an external disk...

And another bunch of issues

Muttling -> RE: will googlechromebooks maim pc industry (6/16/2011 5:17:01 PM)

Hold your VOTES, I think we have a LOSER.....

The thread's OP (DavidLee44UK) has started a thread called "loosers in life" (link at bottom) and posted responses to the thread 4 times.

He has still failed to answer the question of what happens to cloud based systems when the internet goes down despite having been asked this question several times.

I move that this thread be merged with the Dilbert gripe thread and presented as Exhibit A in the demonstration as to why many people in the technical world find the Dilbert cartoons to be entertaining.

Does the motion have a second?

Depends on broadband speed and if people are happy putting their door keys through their neighbours letter box.

Since I cured world poverty with my PC Google have been trying to get their hands on my work and this is merely their latest attempt.

To be honest, although I like google aps, etc, and I use their programs, document sharing, etc, I could not use them for all of my business.

I have more than my own personal privacy that I have to be concerned about. I have to be concerned about fieldnotes, documents, etc, from people who contribute to my research. I have an ethical obligation to hide the identity of those who take a part in my work. I have to have a plan to secure such information, such as encryption on files that deal with materials that could be used to identify people I work with. There are many people like me out there...

myotherself -> RE: will googlechromebooks maim pc industry (6/16/2011 11:24:40 PM)

of course, going back to the original OP, companies like PC World are unlikely to look the same in 10 or 20 years. If they are smart, they will evolve to adapt to the changing market and change what they do.

If by some bizarre twist of fate the OP is correct and stuff like GoogleChromeBooks becomes the de facto computing standard, it's possible that PC World will become a distributor for this system.

Remember when telephone companies only sold telephone services? Now they sell TV, internet access, hardware, software and a huge number of value-add services. They are also resellers of other companies' services and products - maybe that's the preferred business model of the future?

sorry cupcake, but i don't fucking think so. will it change the industry? fuck yes. the guy on the vid is right, my folks would fucking love this sort of thing. but those sorts of pseudo-luddite users are a shrinking market.

the security issue is the fucking kicker. i'm of the opinion that there is no such thing as a totally fucking secure system if it is connected to the net. so a system that relies entirely on the fucking net to store everything is fucking vulnerable. the reliance on net access makes it useless for a fuck of a lot of uses. think the engineer building a damn in the fucking himalayas, or drilling in the fucking outback. its great if your just fucking around online. emailing, chatting and storing a few fucking recipes. but if you think coca cola is going to be happy relying on google to protect their formula, you have another think coming.

This.
(Although coca cola's formula isn't all that secret: you can probably find it online if you google it.)

Arpig -> RE: will googlechromebooks maim pc industry (6/17/2011 2:51:07 PM)

Yeah, it's the security vis a vis cloud computing that I have issues with, that and as much as I love Google as a search engine, I don't really trust them with much of my personal info. They are financed primarily through advertising, and they do track a lot of what you do. I have Chrome on my machine, but I rarely use it except to look stuff up for just that reason.

I got my first PC way way back (when a 286 was POWER!!!), and they have predicted the death of the PC with every new idea that came along....oddly enough, my latest desktop isn't really all that different than my first.

The reason for this is that they work. You can do pretty much anything on a PC, you can customize it yourself, there is competition that keeps prices down. Adaptability and universality. If I want a new hard drive, I have hundreds to choose from, I can shop around for the best deal...with a Mac...well better hope Apple is having a sale.

Muttling -> RE: will googlechromebooks maim pc industry (6/17/2011 5:46:24 PM)

A 286?   Was that with or without the math co-processor?

I date back to the 8088's, TRS 80's, etc, etc, etc.

I'm a little young for actual punch cards, but I did run HEC-1 and HEC-2 computer models with a punch card emulator.

FullCircle -> RE: will googlechromebooks maim pc industry (6/17/2011 5:49:48 PM)

You only knew you didn't have the math co-processor if the time on the clock jumped forward and backwards at random intervals and the calculator didn't work.
