VirginPotty -> What was (were) your favorite book (s) as a child? (6/16/2011 11:05:19 AM)

All these childhood memory threads made me think about my 2 favorite books growning up....."Charlotte's Web" & "Ramona & Beezus".  Those 2 I ALWAYS checked out of the library!!

Care to share your favorite (s)?[:)]

Pippi Longstocking. I still want to be her!

All the "Little House" books.  I read them over and over and over.

you know, since i first read Grendel when i was 16, i think i can add that, too.
it's still probably my favorite book ever.
when i first read it i didn't really understand most of it (lots and lots of nihilism, oh and existentialism), but i related to the general character story. now i understand more of the philosophy, but the character story is still the most important part.
great book.

By the time I left grade school, the school librarian said she thought I had read every book in their library. Granted, it was a small town school but I was a voracious reader. My all time favs though, as a horse crazy kid.....Walter Farley's Black Stallion books.

juliaoceania -> RE: What was (were) your favorite book (s) as a child? (6/16/2011 12:24:48 PM)

Laura Ingalls Wilder books

There was a series of biographies...I read every one of them...I wish I could remember what they were called.

In grade school, I had a teacher that read to us every morning. By the end of the school year she had read the entire series to us. She was an awesome teacher.

NuevaVida -> RE: What was (were) your favorite book (s) as a child? (6/16/2011 12:37:44 PM)

The Little House series, by Laura Ingals Wilder and the Henry & Beezus/Ramona the Pest books by Beverly Cleary.

Also loved Stuart Little, and The Mouse and the Motorcycle.

One all time favorite was Harriet the Spy by Louise Fitzhough.

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: What was (were) your favorite book (s) as a child? (6/16/2011 12:39:33 PM)

Nancy & Plum and the one about the Poppy Seed Cakes.

Those were the first ones right off the top of my head. Now I'll add:

Nancy Drew Mysteries

Black Stallion books.

The Egyptian

Anything by Pearl S. Buck

Yeah I was a little precocious in the reading department. Our local branch of the city library would only allow children to check out books in their suggested age range, so my mother went down there & convinced them I could check out anything I wanted to read. And I did.

and the velveteen rabbit

I think series are wonderful for kids, because they grow with the books. That is why I loved the fact my son liked reading Harry Potter, which starts out for kids as young as third grade, and then they get more and more complex...

I also liked Charlie and the Chocolate factory

I had a series of books about the Happy Hollisters. Big family of five kids, ages 12 down thru 4, with "perfect" parents, who lived on the shore of a lake, apparently got to travel a lot because of their father's business, and they solved mysteries in just about every setting imaginable, from NYC, Florida, Mexico, Switzerland, the circus, a movie set, a pony farm, a ranch out west, you name it. I read those over and over again.

Also, the "B is for Betsy" series, the "Betsy, Tacy & Tib" series, all the Beverly Cleary books, and a set of family medical encyclopedias my grandma had.

Awwww! My favoritest favorite book of all time was The Poky Little Puppy.
I remember spending a few weeks in the hospital as a teenager, and
my oldest brother, who had been stationed out of state, came to visit me.
He had a brand new copy of the book, and it made all my pain go away.
For a little bit at least. [:D]

Isn't he just the cutest puppy ever!?
