It appears TEPCO and the Japanese central government have been grossly understating the amoun of radiation released and how far its traveled.

Poor Japan... I feel so sorry for their troubles. As someone that lives in the Ring of Fire, I am hyper aware of how it could happen here, and if things are not done to stop it, it probably will.

Thre is a report, from the equivalent of the National Enquirer, of Japanese children near Fukushima reporting symptoms of radiation sickness. I tried to find a better source but couldn't so take it with a big grain of salt.

I have known about this for over a month.

The way I understand it- is people age 50 and over will be fine.    not that - it is any consolation.  It is sad.  Now there is a plant in Nebraska that is a no fly zone, flooded with a level 4 rating.   --as of this week--

That should be in the mainstream media, and the fact that it isn't is rather appalling

Agreed.

Tho someone said that the gauges on the plane could be effected by this and the safety of the plane would be in question.  ( a comment posted on one of the articles I read)

That's pretty ludicrous. Airplanes get exposed to much higher amounts of radiation by simply flying high.

^  I cant find the comment now. The comment was plausible- the wording- tho maybe not 100% convincing.

A nuclear spill in NE would be bad for the east coast.    (well a serious event would be)

1) the plant has a level 4 alert (lowest category)
2) the plant has been shut down since April
3) the NOTAM is for altitudes below 3500 feet, not exactly heinous
4) there are high-tension distribution lines right there, and if the flood hits that stash o' equipment I think life could get downright exciting!

http://hawaiinewsdaily.com/2011/06/nebraska-nuclear-plant-at-level-4-disaster/

CNN reported the fire at the plant on the 8th, the flooding occured, but most news stations were told it was temporary.

I judge the hotness of a news topic by how it is trending on the internet. I do not have cable television currently, so I would not have caught CNN newscast on it.

It seems to be this should be at least as newsworthy as Weiner's crotch shots...

I did not say that I agree with what the internet says is "newsworthy" but it is a rather good gauge as to what the cable news outlets will be talking about, and what people are paying attention to... not perfect though.

I look through the top news stories on google just to see what is trending on there. I read news from all over the place.

And what would you propose we do to stop a Ring of Fire sort of disaster, Julia? You can only take the building codes up so far. I'd rather not live in a concrete and construction foam igloo, thanks.

A friend and I had a great day once, getting lost on the roads and coastline of this part of Japan. It's a beautiful place. Anybody know the half life of the contamination?
