but if its all about a man beating up on a woman so desperate, she appears pitiful, with little mental aspect to it, I'm not sure I'd enjoy it. But it's a classic, and there is so much debate surrounding it, I guess I'll just have to try it myself. What's your opinion of the book?

If that's all you get out of this book you have a very superficial understanding of literature and BDSM. Do some research on the psychology of masochism before reading it and read the introduction by Mandiargues. I blame the bad criticism on a poor understanding of what her challenge as a writer insinuated; she was to challenge the work of the Marquis De Sade and this very much requires the reader to be familiar with his work as a political writer. Maybe read a summary of Justine...

The novel has very little to do with a man beating up on a woman and everything to do with a woman who has never really been dominated in her personal or public life finally finding a reason to surrender. Hope that helps [:)]

I'm in the market for some new books to read.  Is this Outlander series I hear everyone talk about widely available?

Yes.

It definitely has! After hearing all the positive reviews, from people actually in the lifestyle, I think its going to be next on my list of "must buy" erotic fiction. I'll also be sure to do the suggested pre-reading!

the voice of the author has a captivating quality to it, and there are now a couple excellent translations.

Caius, do you have any suggestions as to which translations may be best...I've always had trouble pinning down the best translations to buy.

Are you into serious literary fiction?

I'm into everything, really. Serious literary fiction, sci-fi, fantasy, children's literature, horror, erotica...if it's written well, and makes me think, I enjoy it. On the non-erotic side of things, I am currently reading "Never Let Me Go," by Kazuo Ishiguro. It is AMAZING!

OwnedFemaleFlesh -> RE: Books!!!!! (6/17/2011 3:21:55 PM)

This in no way reflects any of the features looked for in your post, however - they are insanely hot (in a gruesome way I don't really understand) and I just have to recommend them.

The author is Wendy Swanscombe, and she has written 4 books. Six of the Best - a book of short stories, and trilogy containing 'Pale Pleasures', 'Beast' (my favourite) and 'Disciplined Skin'

Be warned, they contain incest, bestiality, scat, being attacked by bumblebees, being fucked anally by butterflies and goldfish, champagne enemas and just about every crazy weird sick fetish thing you can imagine. But they do also contain THE hottest anal sex scenes I have ever read and, I dunno, for some reason they are just hot as fuck. In a really, really weird way.

Oh did I mention the wall of assholes the heroine has to climb by sticking her fingers and toes in the bottoms? Well, you have been warned :-P

*googles her and discovers she has written more*

I must have more of this weirdness!

But anyway, start with 'Beast'

@Lafayette Lady -
I have found Outlander in used book stores in Peru, Singapore, and So. Korea. I'm gonna say they are available....

About "Six of the Best," Amazon.com says "Six short stories mixing surreal debauchery with Sadean depravity." Wow, who could ask for more?[:D]

I saw a bunch of her books on Amazon and have sent samples to my Kindle :)

Hope everybody realizes that most (all?) Amazon books have a "Read first chapter free" feature.

Never heard of Venus and Furs, so I'll definitely have to take a look. As for "Story of O," I've been debating buying it for some time. No one will deny its a classic staple of the bdsm lit, but while I've talked to many that love it, I've also talked to people who have said it's too violent to be sexy. I don't mind violence per say (ummm, bdsm junkie, duh...), but if its all about a man beating up on a woman so desperate, she appears pitiful, with little mental aspect to it, I'm not sure I'd enjoy it. But it's a classic, and there is so much debate surrounding it, I guess I'll just have to try it myself. What's your opinion of the book?

Sacher-Masoch (the guy we thank for the masochism in BDSM), Austrian aristo who was a superb writer, not just his Venus in Furs novel, his other stuff is well worth a look too, additionally he inspired Velvet Underground to the song Venus in Furs, a must read.

As to Story of O, I actually never saw her as pityful or weak, quite a lot of mental aspect to it and one thing that is very impressive is the style and politeness, everything is so refined and graceful, it's amazing, there is also a lot of tenderness in between the lines. Give it a try, you might not like it - so then nothing is lost, actually there is an online version of it so you can read it there if you don't want to risk buying it.

Oooh, if you can get / already have the first chapter of Six of the Best, that would be really great. It's about a woman who wakes up one day to discover that she has a cock, and she decides to have some fun with it. Well, quite a lot of fun with it, actually :-D

DesFIP -> RE: Books!!!!! (6/17/2011 5:18:59 PM)

Story of O is absolute drivel. The author may have had lofty aspirations when she wrote it, but she certainly didn't achieve them.

Not bdsm lit but general lit which has lots of sex and power and some bdsm in it are the Black Dagger Brotherhood novels.

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Books!!!!! (6/17/2011 5:23:28 PM)

those books sound bananas, OFF; will have to check them out. =p

Yes, I recommend the translation by Sabine d'Estrée foremost.    I think Ballantine still publishes a paperback edition which uses this translation.  Actually, I believe the book is public domain, so I wouldn't be surprised if you can find it somewhere online.

And what exactly were these lofty aspirations of hers and how did she not achieve them?

rawtape -> RE: Books!!!!! (6/19/2011 5:58:31 PM)

As someone who is rather fond of the Story of O, I have to ask: did those of you who read the purported sequel, Retour à Roissy, feel that it was written by someone other than Pauline Réage (Anne Desclos) and rather lacking in comparison?

I'll also admit to having a soft spot for Pat (now Patrick) Califia's Doc and Fluff: The Dystopian Tale of a Girl and Her Biker.
