Hello All,

So...I'll admit it. I am a book whore. You won't find me anywhere without a novel somewhere in my over-sized purse, and I am starting to acquire quite a large collection. This, of course, includes my secret sexy collection of erotic fiction, nonfiction, instructional manuals, etc. Lord knows its HARD to find high quality erotic literature, especially of the bdsm variety, and I want to know if you all have any suggestions for myself and the forum, or even a book review or two. I'll start!!!!

The Shadowlands Series, by Cherise Sinclair: I bought the first three books (Club Shadowlands, Dark Citadel, and Breaking Free) and certainly plan on purchasing the rest at some point. I really enjoyed the character development. For me, the appeal of bdsm is the mental aspects involved, so I get a lot more out of an erotic story with well developed characters than I do from books with lots of sex, and very 2D characters. There were some very creative scenes that I really did enjoy, and the safety issues emphasized (safe words, condoms, etc.) made the book morally sound and educational. My only beef was that the books weren't quite as "dark" as I would of liked. The most adventurous any one character gets, in any one book, is a little anal. Additionally, the books all had a similar formula: Male Dom isn't ready to commit, finds sub with claws he gets attached to and can't help himself. There was also a LOT of exhibitionism, which is great for some people, but I'm not into exhibition so much. So, well written book, but a little formulaic and "soft core" as far as bdsm goes for my tastes.

it's hard to give you book reviews if we don't know what you've already read. =p are you mostly an erotic fiction person, do you read general BDSM books, too?

If you're a fan of fantasy series, check out the Kushiel series by Jacqueline Carey. The first trilogy is written from the perspective of a woman who experiences pain as pleasure. Crazy sexy, and just plain awesome.

Story of O and Venus and Furs are classics, so is anything written by De Sade and Restif.

I read both! Also, I'm not necessarily looking for people to post books that strictly cater to my tastes, I want this to be a useful resource for anyone who wants to take a look. Thanks for taking a peek!

Never heard of Venus and Furs, so I'll definitely have to take a look. As for "Story of O," I've been debating buying it for some time. No one will deny its a classic staple of the bdsm lit, but while I've talked to many that love it, I've also talked to people who have said it's too violent to be sexy. I don't mind violence per say (ummm, bdsm junkie, duh...), but if its all about a man beating up on a woman so desperate, she appears pitiful, with little mental aspect to it, I'm not sure I'd enjoy it. But it's a classic, and there is so much debate surrounding it, I guess I'll just have to try it myself. What's your opinion of the book?

Story of O actually has an interesting history. The woman who wrote it did so as "love letters" to her lover to meet a challenge. It's drivel but certainly has a place in the history ummm books.

Of course if you are into fantasy that is rife with sex and intrigue, go to Amazon, type in the Lantis Sagas. Pick up Uller the Shyne, though the new one, the Outlaw Vol, is also out. Both are just awesome!

'Story of O' is not only the definitive work of the genre, setting many of the qualities and themes we see espoused in modern bdsm today, the voice of the author has a captivating quality to it, and there are now a couple excellent translations.  It's not just an unrivaled work about submission, it's also simply a beautifully written book, intense despite a kind of slow-burning narrative.  Sometimes someone gets it just perfectly right the first time and everything that follows is just tribute.

Short of that there's surely a dirth of other quality books explicitly along those lines.  The only other one I can think of is 'Venus in the Furs', the quality of which I can't attest to, never having read it (it seems unlikely to appeal to my tastes).   Now if you're looking for more that directly treats on modern (or in the case of Story of O' and 'Venus in the Furs', early modern) bdsm themes, my observation has always been that pickings are pretty slim if you're looking for something above the calibur of trashy pulp romance novels.  If you really want your fix for those kinds of themes you're probably going to find it most readily in works set in non-contemporary settings, you'll find the themes pretty well represented in both historical fiction and speculative fiction (sci-fi and fantasy in particular), where it's sometimes treated well but more often in a...well, speculative and fantastical fashion. :)

I found Kushiel's Scion about some time ago in my Border's bargain section...3 years back or so. I totally fell in love with that book.

frankly, i enjoy Story of O -- i think the problem stemming from the book is people seeing that as some sort of reflection of reality. =p there may be parts where i say "oh come on," or that i just flat out can't get into, but overall, i enjoy the way it's written and the tone of the author.  it's like those bad Harlequin romance novels in a way. =p

a non-fiction book i've wanted to read is Jack Rinella's Becoming a Slave. i just like to absorb other people's info and points of view and see how it can inform my own points of view, or help me further reflect on something i thought i had figured out.

I'm in the market for some new books to read.  Is this Outlander series I hear everyone talk about widely available?
