Bioluminescence: A Special Treat for the Nature Nerds here on CM

I know many of you will appreciate this one

This is an awesome TED Talk about 12 min.....enjoy!!

Know what's a blast? Turn all the lights off when you're on a night dive, give your eyes a few mins to adjust and then start waving your arms around under water. It's like being a kid with sparklers all over your body.

Very cool.

Another night dive trick is to take a glow stick with you.   Cut it open in an area of no current or very slow current   You'll be surrounded by little glowing dots.

is that scientifically known as the "one.of.us. response?"

*puts night diving on the do-before-death list*

Diving is a great sport and night dives are uber cool, but just to let you know.....sport divers are limited to around 125 ft which isn't nearly deep enough to see this in nature.    This is a behavior seen at great depths where natural light can't get to and requires a submersible to get to.

that's not entirely accurate; there are areas of the world where bioluminescence can be observed in shallow water, like around vieques island in puerto rico.

Lucylastic -> RE: Bioluminescence: A Special Treat for the Nature Nerds (6/17/2011 6:04:46 AM)

Off the greek islands in the med too.
But some of the ones found in deeep diving are fascinating.
