I don't know, the idea alone puts me off. But I guess I never will stop being amazed at the kind of crazy diets people do, the whole concept is fairly simple, consume more than you burn and your body will turn it into fat. Eat much less than you need and your body prepares for starvation and your metabolism will slow down.

I put cabbage IN soup/stews. I fry cabbage. I make slaw with cabbage. I have heard of cabbage soup, but only in the context of the very, very, very poor who could afford nothing else. Like Charlie Bucket and family or sci-fi stories that take place in the USSR.

quote:

I tend to like veg a lot, when I slip into a processed food diet (while traveling or being under stress) my natural reactions and appetite seems to be "off", so since I also happen to be borderline anemic (runs in the family) it's in my best interest to eat healthy and

One of the supermarkets BEST invention was the already made veggie tray. Veggies do not go to waste in my house. I recently planted a slew of radishes. They have sprouted and I can hardly wait for them to be ready to harvest so that I can plant some more of them. The tomatoes have started having little green tomatoes on them and the herb garden is nearly ready to be turned into spaghetti sauce for canning.

As far as the travel goes, my digestive system hates me when I travel and am eating all restaurant food. I end up ordering side salads and nothing else.

quote:

You know, I always thought the reduced calorie stuff is a complete fad, I rather eat less of something tasty and feel happy and good about what I had, than something that's mainly artificial and leaves you feel wanting.

I am trying to think of anything that I like that is low-calorie or low-fat. Soda pop and some salad dressings are it. Frankly for most of the stuff I would prefer to go without rather than eat the low-fat/no-fat/low-calorie.

quote:

I think the key is in moderation and knowing what your body will tolerate and what is good for you. Occasionally messing up and enjoying, nothing wrong with it, but I doubt living in denial and feeling guilty for every time you're having fun, that must be miserable.

Moderation in all things, including moderation. And I really do not consider the occasional indulgence to be messing up. I consider it a celebration of humanity and the creativity and splendor that we have made of food as opposed to sitting in a tree and eating it while it still wiggles. [:)]

Your Results: You need 2086 calories to maintain your current weight You need to eliminate 500 calories a day to lose weight. We recommend you do that by a combination of diet and exercise, e.g., eat 200 fewer calories and burn 300 calories through exercise.

According to that site I need 2797 calories a day. I put in "moderate" for activity level but I do go to the gym 4 or 5 times a week and do a workout that includes two miles on the tread mill at 3 mph and 2 degree elevation and 11 weight machines for a total body workout.
I joined Weight Watchers two weeks ago because I couldn't seem to get rid of my gut.
That's the only place on my body that's fat.
So, I went to the weigh-in last wed. night and I lost 3 pounds in my first week! And I was only hungry about twice during that period.

There are some 'tricks' for dealing with that. You can drink a large glass of ice-water or make yourself a low to no calorie snack. Pickles, celery, green beans, stuff like that. You can also try an activity to take your mind off of it and you can look at the times it happened and how you have your eating times laid out and make some adjustments.

quote:

I think the most I've ever lost at the gym alone was 1 pound in a week.

You also gain muscle at the gym. I always suggest using a tape measure on the different parts of your body and watch how that changes as well. It is not good to just rely on the scale.
quote:

I'm getting a handle on my bad eating habits, no more eating a whole sleeve of cookies, just 3 to 5 now.

That is one of the hard things for people to learn. It is better to just eat the cookie/ice cream/whatever NOW instead of obsessing on it and end up eating all the cookies/ice cream/whatever.
quote:

For the last few years I've been ordering not a box or two of Girl Scout cookies but a case!

That is okay and you can keep doing so. They freeze well. You can always just take out a sleeve at a time and portion them into baggies to be put back into the freezer. This works well with homemade cookies, cakes, and other treats.
quote:

I can actually "feel" my gut going down and my pants aren't so tight.

Tape measure! And then you can look at the loss on paper!
quote:

And I cut way back on Coca Colas, I drink ice water or green tea instead.

Those sodas are bad news. If it is not the sugar getting you it is the salt, which makes you retain water.
quote:

Before I'd fill up a whole plate with food, now I do half of that.

Another 'trick' that works like a charm. Buy some smaller plates. Studies have shown that you will still feel full but will eat less food put on a smaller plate.

I wish you the best of luck with this.

The 'tricks' are not really secret tricks. They are just ways to help you learn a new way of eating and thinking about food.

If it's not snooping into people's personal affairs, the ones that eat less than 2000 calories a day, could I ask you if you've gone on extreme diets before and therefore messed a bit with your metabolism?

Yes, I have been on many extreme diets in the past.  None worked.  Some that I have been on...  Slim Fast, Stop the Insanity (stayed within every guideline and exercized, ate no meat and eliminated fat from my diet, but still put on 30 lbs on that one in one year), a grapefruit only diet, a bread diet, some diet where I drank three one ounce servings of some kind of amino acids and had nothing else with calories.

I have fasted, tried what seems like every diet under the sun and also asked a doctor to put me on a diet...he gave me a 1000 calorie per diet that left me ravenously hungry all day long, week after week.  It was worse than not eating at all.

The only diet that helped me was the old Atkins one (yes, I ate lots of low carb veggies as well as berries and some sitrus), but since my life got even more sedentary even this one I cannot lose weight on.  Going for long walks is out (knee problems), and I cannot get down to the floor to get my old exercize program done.  Destroyed a bed by doing situps and leg raises on it...  <sighs>  Am working on other alternatives that I can afford.

Long time ago I was exercizing like mad and eating only one modest meal per day.  No other calories.  But I was gaining weight anyway.  I got worried that I would get some vitamin deficiency (sp?) so I started adding several Slim Fast type powdered drinks (added to whole milk) to the tune of adding 800 more calories per day...and started losing weight like crazy.  I was having something like six "meals" per day instead of one.

I sort of resent it that men have a much easier time losing weight that the average woman.  My son lost 11 pounds these past two months by merely playing a little frizbee with the neighbor boy sometimes, in spite of the fact that I bought him doughnuts (he begs so adorably and it is summertime) several times.  I would have to starve and suffer for months to lose that much, and even then there are no guarantees.

Birth control pills, nerve meds, anything can put on the pounds.  <sighs>

Iamsemisweet -> RE: How many calories do you need per day? (6/19/2011 5:14:23 PM)

I bought a device called a bodybugg a year ago. It measures how many calories the wearer burns in a day with a fair amount of accuracy. I lost 30 lbs in the last year by incorporating that information into my diet and eating less than it said I was burning. It is made by apex although I think other companies make similar products.
It isn't 100% accurate in measuring some activities, but it is far better than trying to calculate your metabolism based on a chart. For example, it over reports the calories I expend riding horses, and sometimes under reports calories from really strenuous activity, I think. Also , if your exercise of choice is bike riding or spinning, it needs to be worn on your leg, not your arm, or it will underreport. Still, I love the thing and it has made a real difference in my life.
My calorie expenditure varies from 1760 (if I am sick in bed) to 2650, if I work really hard physically that day.

FR  OP,

sneaky you-  slipping in one more fat thread.   ;-)

LillyBoPeep -> RE: How many calories do you need per day? (6/19/2011 8:09:28 PM)

that site says i need over 2500 calories to maintain my current weight with my age and activity level; that seems like a HELL of a lot of calories.
the good thing, of course, is that i have no plan to maintain my current weight. i'm in a wonderous weight loss cycle. i might even take a new profile picture.

While I'm delighted you are meeting your goals and getting ready to show off the body, please keep the new photos just as hot as your current avatar.   I always notice when you post as I really like that photo of you.

I'm quite certain I'm under 2000 calories a day, but I don't track my calories anymore so I couldn't tell you my exact consumption.

Years ago I did a low carb diet from my doctor (it wasn't Atkins, it was a detox diet of sorts, for other medical issues - he removed red meat, dairy, all sugars (including fruit), any chemicals (additives, flavorings, colorings, preservatives), no wheat...among other things.  I was limited to 100 carbs a day.  I lost 60 pounds in a year but as soon as he lifted the diet, I put it all right back on again, because I hadn't learned how to eat right in the real world.  However, I don't think it messed with my metabolism at all.

I've been doing weight watchers for the last two years and lost 80 pounds. Yesterday I bought my first size 10 pants (down from a size 22) and I'm exhilarated.  I eat mostly whole and natural foods, and I exercise (although not very much, admittedly).  This is not an extreme diet at all.  I have learned how to eat - how to lose the weight and how to maintain the weight loss.  I can enjoy a nice treat from time to time, so I don't feel deprived, and I never feel hungry.  I've never felt better - I am fully fueled and I have a new found energy and sense of presence.

Oh as for the cabbage question - I actually love cabbage (I'm weird like that). In the winter I make cabbage soup a LOT.  It doesn't cause problems, but I do need Gas Ex, lol.  [;)]

LillyBoPeep -> RE: How many calories do you need per day? (6/20/2011 7:54:44 AM)

you know, a relative of mine tried the cabbage soup thing once YEARS ago, but that dadblasted soup is actually one of my favorite foods. especially with big chunks of stewed tomato and lots of crushed red pepper flakes.
i make it a lot in the winter, too. ^_^ haha

NuevaVida -> RE: How many calories do you need per day? (6/20/2011 8:03:32 AM)

Oh God yes, you need red pepper flakes in there - yummy and spicy!!

A coworker always razzed me about it, until I brought her some and she tried it.  Then she asked for the recipe.

Aylee -> RE: How many calories do you need per day? (6/20/2011 8:05:16 AM)

I might actually have to find a recipe for cabbage soup.

LillyBoPeep -> RE: How many calories do you need per day? (6/20/2011 8:10:45 AM)

this is the recipe i mostly use (copy-n-pasting from the webbernetz, rather than digging up my recipe file =p) --

Ingredients:
  • 6 large green onions (1 bunch)
  • 2 green bell peppers
  • 1 or 2 cans of tomatoes (14.5 ounce size, diced or whole)
  • 1 bunch celery, sliced
  • 1/2 head cabbage, chopped
  • 1 package (Lipton) onion soup mix 1 or 2 cubes bouillon (optional)
  •  1 48 oz can V8 juice, or 6 cups water or light chicken or vegetable broth

Season to taste with salt, pepper, parsley, curry, garlic powder, etc.

*Preparation:Simmer or slow cook all until soup is done.

(there are some recipes that include other stuff like watercress, or mushrooms - it's a SUPER basic recipe so you can dress it up however you like -- another thing i like about it. sometimes i add carrots, sometimes i don't. sometimes i drain the juice off canned tomatoes, sometimes i add it. sometimes i use fresh ones! it's great for using up stuff in the fridge that you dont know what to do with. =p)

(p.s i don't usually use V8 juice, either; i go with water and vegetable bouillon/broth)

oh oh oh... I am looking to get either a bodybugg or a fitbit and I cant decide yet which. I want to know which measures calorie burn the most accurately. I tend to go on the elliptical, exercise bike and rowing machine. Also lifting free weights.

Did you also look at the fitbit, if so, what were your thoughts?
Have you used your bodybugg while on gym equipment and compare the calories your bodybugg said you burned vs the calories the machine said?
Any other insight on these devices would be appreciated. [:)]

NuevaVida -> RE: How many calories do you need per day? (6/20/2011 8:18:05 AM)

I just kinda make up my own as I go along:

* Heat a pot of chicken stock (I use fat free chicken broth)
* In a separate pot or pan, saute the following in olive oil (any combination of veggies that you prefer, actually):
  • Garlic (crushed or sliced very thinly)
  • Onion (green, red, yellow - whatever you're in the mood for)
  • Thinly sliced carrots (optional)
  • Mushroom (I use crustinis)
  • chopped up baby bok choy (about 2)
  • I have a supply of about 2 inch dried whole red peppers. I place about 2 whole peppers in there, and remove them when the soup is ready.
  • Cabbage!  Lots of cabbage (about half a cabbage)
I do the saute in stages, due to the size of my saute pan and the quickness in which some of the veggies cook. Sauteing the veggies is optional, but I like the flavor it brings.

Just slide all the sauteed veggies into the broth, let simmer awhile, and serve up!  If I have leftover rice I might add it, or left over chicken, but usually the veggies on its own is delectable, and it's SO low fat/low calorie/low carb/low everything - but mucho yummy.

Mine tends to be full bodied and thick and more like a stew [:)], I am not really fond of very liquid soups.

i've thought about doing that next time i go for one or two things, but i don't think cabbage soup stuff would fit in my reusable shopping bags and if the plastic bags ripped, or paper handles broke off? i don't have enough hands!

but otherwise *snicker snicker* ^.~
