Status: offline 		Seriously.  I always thought war and peace was a silly book.  Not relevant. 

But now that I ponder war-   which years were we NOT in a war?

Status: offline 		If Obama can kill anybody for any reason- as he now can and did with Bin Lauden,  then there is precedent that his most recent war action would be legal- if in fact the law that he can kill anyone anywhere still applies.

In my 47 years alive most of them the US has been in war-   all of them if you count Korea.

The 80s seemed peaceful-  enter tho Iran contra war by proxy.

Good question but first you need to realise the west has a military that needs constant training and a reason to justify it.

Great question.

The answer is: rarely

Actually if you count the number of military actions on foreign soil conducted by the USA, the UK and France since 1945, you'll probably find that number is far greater than the rest of the world combined. And it's likely that there hasn't been a single year when one of the three wan't engaged in military action somewhere. Throw Israel into the mix and you're talking telephone numbers.

Based on these figures it's impossible to make the case that the 'West' is peace-loving. Far easier and far more accurate to conclude that the 'West' is the most belligerent, aggressive sector of the world.

Well I for one can attest to our being at peace from 4 May 1977 through 11 Apr 1983.  Those would be the dates of my service in the U.S. Air Force. In Sep. 1983 (or Oct.) our peace came to a crashing end when Ronnie Regan got 241 (or 243 depending on source) blown up in Beirut.  We then invaded that great threat Grenada.  That was when the late Mr bin Laden concluded were were a "paper tiger" which as we know led to other problems and the now seemingly never ending "War on Terror".  All just more bullshit to propagate  the "military-industrial complex" Eisenhower tried to warn us about.

Status: offline 		I'm 47 and i don't think we've ever truly at "peace". There was always some military action going on. In response to Tazzygirl's question about there being a difference between military action and full scale war---a military action does not take an act of Congress while war does and that's why we've mostly had 'military action" it is still acts of war. Face it, the good ole USofA is a war-mongering country bent on ruling the world one way or another, no different than any other empire throughout history. We've even committed several acts of attempted ethnic cleansing but no history book will use that term in regards to US military action.

Status: offline 		And I would point out that we have been asked to interfere in many "conflicts" as well. Warmongering.... possibly. We are the "new" kids on the block. Tough and arrogant, to be sure. And often looked too for just that reason.

Status: offline 		There's a complete listing of every official US military action of foreign soil here, compiled by the Congressional Research Service. This list covers 1798-2010. It covers only official actions. Covert actions or incidents involving US proxies (eg the Bay of Pigs or Israel) are excluded.

Unsurprisingly its a long list - 30 or so pages. 20 of those pages (or about 2/3 of the report) are for the post World War II period. So it would appear that the historical trend is towards increasing overseas military activities by the US.
