A quote of the day if there ever was one!!!

Lucylastic -> RE: drunken stroller operator (6/19/2011 9:52:00 AM)

I gave up drinking when I got preggers with my eldest, but..I used to go to my long time favourite pub with her. I would have a britvic orange and lemonade, hubby would play cards and I would hang out with the landlady and others.. they were my extended family, In the summer, we would sit out in the garden. IF I needed to feed her, they would show me upstairs to the living room of the landlord so I could do it in private.

Im not decrying the facts behind this particular case. Im just glad it wasnt punitive in the UK years ago.

Well no. The busy body failed to render aid in what might have been a critical situation.   Rather then offering to see them home..(how far could it have been?)   He wanted to extract money out of him to a fine by the police.    Maybe the dad was looking at a woman there that the other guy wanted.

coulda shoulda woulda.

get your head outta yer ass.  You were NOT there.  quit being a footstool quarterback.

Hunky, over the years I have allowed a lotta slack to you given your self-professed issues..
but here I draw the line.  You are NOT a parent and wont ever be./   Nor am I ever gonna be a parent.  The difference is that I actually listen to my friends that ARE parents.. and I draw on my perceptions as an  adult child of those that had to deal with me as a child and as a teen.

OK, stopping here, because as much as I love the Mods, I do not wish to make them work any harder...

Lets suppose there were 10 others just like this guy all roaming around aimlessly and drunk....  it could be fatal if they collide if on a hill.

pahunkboy -> RE: drunken stroller operator (6/19/2011 9:57:37 AM)

In all seriousness,  I think the busy body at the bar should mind his own business.

I would not have made such a call.

I hope you do not misunderstand me, I am not judging people. I am just saying how the law is here.. it might not be technically illegal to push a stroller while legally drunk down the street. I can imagine if something happened there would be repercussions. So, is it right or wrong? I think it would depend on a few factors which I would have to be around to see. I know how we are here, though, which is we hold people up by their balls when they drink and something happens while they are under the influence

Is that right or wrong? I think it is better than the way it used to be in some regards. People used to pass out drunk with their kids around and no one would do a damn thing but shake their heads... my mom was in a car accident when she was 9 because their neighbor hit them head on... she couldn't walk because she was so drunk. So, while perhaps there is an overreaction, it is better than the attitude we used to have here about alcohol, which was fairly laissez-faire

JstAnotherSub -> RE: drunken stroller operator (6/19/2011 10:03:58 AM)

damn pa, what if this had happened?!?!?!?!

A man is waiting for wife to give birth. The doctor comes in and informs the dad that his son was born without torso, arms or legs. The son is just a head! But the dad loves his son and raises him as well as he can, with love and compassion.
After 21 years, the son is old enough for his first drink. Dad takes him to the bar and tearfully tells the son “he is proud of him.”
Dad orders up the biggest, strongest drink for his boy. With all the bar patrons looking on curiously and the bartender shaking his head in disbelief, the boy takes his first sip of alcohol. Swoooop! A torso pops out!
The bar is dead silent; then bursts into a whoop of joy. The father, shocked, begs his son to drink again. The patrons chant “Take another drink”! The bartender still shakes his head in dismay.
Swoooop! Two arms pops out. The bar goes wild. The father, crying and wailing, begs his son to drink again. The patrons chant, “Take another drink”! The bartender ignores the whole affair. By now the boy is getting tipsy, and with his new hands he reaches down, grabs his drink and guzzles the last of it. Swoooop! Two legs pop out.
The bar is in chaos. The father falls to his knees and tearfully thanks God. The boy stands up on his new legs and stumbles to the left…. then to the right…. right through the front door, into the street, where a truck runs over him and kills him instantly.
The bar falls silent. The father moans in grief. The bartender sighs and says, “That boy should have quit while he was a head.”

No:) I didnt misunderstand you at all:) theres a difference between the two countries:) and backgrounds, beliefs.I still got your point:) No problem

JstAnotherSub -> RE: drunken stroller operator (6/19/2011 10:07:46 AM)

As for the OP, I agree that it is easy to sit and judge.  Just taking a baby to a bar, in a stroller is not a crime, and I have no idea if the dad was drunk.  You can never tell how someone else handles alcohol.

I have been to bars where folks brought kids, sometimes because they worked there, and sometimes because they just wanted to.  Sometimes this has irked me, and sometimes it has not, but I would only make that judgement being there and seeing it in person, not from reading about it.

Same here.

PA has similar laws...  per kids at a bar.

It is illegal to take minors into a bar here

For goodness sake, it takes so LITTLE to put someone over the legal limit. One for me will do it, which is why if I am driving I never have a drink with dinner if we are out.
Annnd this. I am over the legal limit if i have a 16 oz beer.
I seriously doubt the parent in question bundled the kid up with the intention of getting hammered that night. Yes, in retrospect it was a bad judgment call in the eyes of some, but i cannot see it as intentional irresponsibility. (Eh....Junior'll be fine. These strollers come with seatbelts nowadays and besides...whats a little bump on the head?")

There was a story in the news awhile ago where a 2 year old was found wandering the streets during the day. The police were called  and news crews were filming when a FRANTIC woman came running up to the group. She was the mom and when she found out the child was safe, she fainted.

The 2 yr old was taken into the custody of CYS and an emergency hearing said that she worked a night shift and was waiting for her husband to come home so she could go to bed. She fell asleep on her feet and the baby saw his chance to explore his little world. There was "counseling" given by CYS to her and the little ones dad and the baby was returned to them the next day.

The LoudOne was the same age as the RomingRugRat when this situation happened and my initial thought was *GASP!!* BAD PARENT!! She should not get the child back!!!

I will admit to being a judgemental idiot. She was exausted and fell asleep. Thank God the lil one was safe and hopefully it was a wakeup call that will prevent a re-occurrence.

An unwise choice does not make a bad parent.

Yanno, it might be here too.  The experiences I am talking about happened many many moons ago.......I know they allow minors here, if they are in the band.

The one thing I am sure of is, that if smoking is allowed, no one under 18 is allowed, even if they are in the band.  At least that is how it is at the couple of bars I go to nowadays to hear tunes.

slvemike4u -> RE: drunken stroller operator (6/19/2011 10:54:18 AM)

While I generally feel parents are the best arbitrar of how to raise their children(with unfortunately way too many exceptions) I agree that a bar ,especially one where selling alcohol is the end all and be all of their existence ....this excludes rest/bars....I like this law.
When I was out there,in Cali, everyone got carded as they entered ...no ID,no entrance....I was over 40 at the time and needed to show my licence....IMO that is not a bad idea.

LaTigresse -> RE: drunken stroller operator (6/19/2011 10:55:06 AM)

There is a little town down the road that has one bar. Quite often, they have pot lucks. In the 10 years I've lived here I've probably been to that bar a handful of times. I just don't like bars. But I have stopped in at the urging of other family members that frequent the bar, during the pot luck dinner nights. Each time there are loads of kids there. Initially I thought it was because it was just because of the meal. I learned that the locals taking their kids in, is the norm. That the locals kids run in and out all the time, usually because that is where their parents are.

For me, my personal standards for myself.........it's wrong. For them, it is normal. Most of those people are fairly heavy drinkers. That bar is more community centre and local gathering place, like one big weird hillbilly incestuous family, than what a lot of people think of a bar to be.

I don't like it, I don't believe in it, I wouldn't do it. But the reality is that that kind of thing goes on alllllllllll over small town/rural America. I tend to believe that fewer kids are damaged by it than are. And I would venture to say that there are many more choices the parents make, actions taken, that are far more harmful.

Caused by a drunken tricyclist, if I read the article correctly.

We all do have to live by our own personal standards, that I agree 100% on.

I just had to comment that not all incentuous families are hillbillies.  And not all hillbillies are inbreeding fools.

That stereotype irks me.  Some days it feels that country folks are the one part of society that many still consider it to be ok to make fun of.

I know I probably read more in to it than you intended, but, I had to comment.
