What is is it that makes scifi/fantasy fans and BDSM go togeather How many do we have here ? Is there a link at all ? or is it just a numbers game

A few years ago the nearby sci fi convention called Inconjunction had a panel on this but that was before I started going myself.

I'd guess its a desire to see or try out new and non-traditional things.

Or else we geeks are just very loud people who get seen often.

I was a SF geek before being an SF geek was cool... I remember watching StarTrek.  The FIRST time it was on the air.  Lost in Space (the first 5 - 6 eps when Dr. Smith was really EVIL, before they turned him into a buffoon).  Dark Shadows. Galactica (ver 1.0 AND 2.0), Bab5, Farscape, Firefly, StarGate (and SG-1 and Atlantis), ST:TNG and DS9.

I started playing D&D when it was D&D (NOT AD&D) and it came in a boxed, digest sized, 3-book set (circa 1977).

I was going to SF and gaming cons in the late 70's - early 80's, and I've been doing Dragon*Con since 1990 when Tom Clancy was the GOH (I've been on _staff_ at D*C since 1994!).

I read everything from Asimov to Zelazny, King & Koontz & Straub, & Laurell Hamilton & Tonya Huff & Sherry Kenyon & Leslie Banks...

I think it is more of a case that kinksters are drawn to SF/fantasy than the other way around.  The SF/fantasy/gaming crowd is, for the most part, far more accepting of those who are "different", the ones who don't fit in, the ones who fall outside societal norms.  In the genre there is more experimentation of gender and roles and alternative sexuality.  No one can tell me, with a straight face, that Klingons are not the SM crowd of the StarTrek Universe. And lets not forget Robert Heinlein's brilliant works like Stranger in a Strange Land, Job, and others.  StarTrek spawned it's own sub-genre in gay fan-fic stories about Kirk and Spock... And that whole alternate evil Empire Universe... Helllllooooooo NURSE!   Cisco was banging his wife, Kyra AND Dax!  WOOT!  *LOL*

And someone, please, tell me Laurell K. Hamilton ain't gotta clue about this lifestyle, or poly?  She's either one of us, or she's got way, Way, WAY too much access for a vanilla!  *lol*  And Susan Wright, spokesperson for the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom (http://www.ncsfreedom.org) has written 11 StarTrek novels among her many other works...  Oh yeah.. the SF/Fantasy/Gaming world is full of pervs, and you betcha, there's a lotta cross-over!  Good thing in my opinion.. I can go to Dragon*Con leading my girls around on a leash and no one bats an eye!  *LMAO*

- Geoff

I remember so well. And now that Dr Who is back - all is well in the universe!

Hi Fire!

*smiles*  Frolicon is the direct descendant of an earlier sf/kink crossover con - Phantasm. I ran the front at The Sanctuary once during Phantasms Sunday play party... Alas, The Sanctuary of a Dark Angel, as well as Phantasm, is no more.

For kinky stuff I get out to 1763 now and then.  Perhaps I'll make it to Frolicon next year.

Oh! I love the new Dr. Who! Best looking one yet. And, just enough cheesy special effects to have that classic Dr. Who flare! AND, he wears leather. *sigh* Damnit...where's that scarf???

The leather DrWho  is a "right hard Northerner"  and ye gods does his season get slash-y
happy sigh ...

ArchangelMichael -> RE: Im going to the special hell..geeks and BDSM (5/15/2006 2:04:12 PM)

I definitely fall into the category of a geeky person who's into BDSM. I like Star Wars, Harry Potter, Anime, roleplaying, video games, etc.

There is a correlation, but there are also a lot of geeks who wouldn't touch BDSM (just as there are a lot of goths who won't even if they often dress the part) and there are many people into BDSM who aren't geeky. Although, probably a larger percentage of people into BDSM are geeky as compared to the entire population of the world and vice versa.

I think it has to do with intelligence and our need for fantasy. I know that many people into BDSM live it for real and would balk at the idea of it being a fantasy. But think about it. What we experience in this lifestyle is the stuff of fantasy for many people and often we got where we are because of our fantasies.

We have the DVDs pre-ordered.

We're just hoping the Dr.Who club will have the latest episodes at Inconjunction again this year.

I just looked them up -- they will have the new season!

Damn, just when I hope to be running my Ghoul Fatal Addiction game too.... I'll have to miss some Dr. Who.

*Cry*
