here are a few more articles on the flooding situation here; on one side, we have people engaging in fearmongering, and on the other, we have people telling us that there's absolutely nothing to be worried about.
reality is probably somewhere in the middle. my house is far enough to avoid direct flood damage, but a few of my friends are in "if shit gets REALLY bad" flood range. plus if something does happen to the plants... well...

So your bottom line is Worried? Not Worried? I mean taking into account the fates of your apparently not too distant neighbors ...

Nuclear leaks potentially effect all of us. Anyone it does affect really sucks for them. I am wondering if any cm'rs are out that way and could let us know what is going on?

There isn't any risk of radiation leakage at present.  The Fort Calhoun plant has been offline since April for refueling and maintenance.

the nuclear plant is supposed to be offline until the fall, as far as i know.
about the rest of it, i dunno -- i suppose i could drive over there since it's only in Blair, and try to get in someone's face and get some information, but they don't have to tell me the truth about anything.
and the alarmists on the other side who are bound and determined to make a conspiracy about it are going to do what they do

back where i'm from, we had a really bad flood that obliterated half the town. oil from a refinery got out everywhere and added insult to injury. it only came out later that the pumps moving oil from one tank to another were never actually turned off, which was contrary to what the company had told people.
so frankly, whatever happens, nobody's going to know the truth until it happens. for me, i think about any possibility, no matter how remote, and try to determine how i can possibly help or be prepared. a friend in the "if shit gets REALLY bad" zone knows he, his wife, and his dog have a place to stay if they need it. the rest, i guess we'll just see what happens.

What about the Cooper plant? Last I heard they're refusing to shut down.

I don't know what you've heard or where you heard it, but I'm not seeing any stories about refusing to shut down.  Their plan calls for shutdown if the flood surge reaches 902 feet above sea level.  The last update I've seen is this:

Flood waters along the Missouri River came within 18 inches to forcing a nuclear power plant in Nebraska to shutdown.
The river has to hit 902 feet above sea level at Brownville before officials will shut down the Cooper Nuclear Plant.
Nebraska Public Power district says the river rose to 900.56 before dropping slightly this morning.
The plant is currently operating at full capacity.

The sky is not yet falling.

they're saying water hasn't yet gotten high enough to warrant shutting down that plant. that's all i really know about it. it's not outright refusal, they simply have protocols in place and they are confident that they're safe enough to continue operating.

How long will it take them to shut it down if a levee breaks?

Where do you get the idea that they will have the right to do that on their own?

They have a plan to follow and the plan states that if the river reaches 902 feet then it will shut down.
They can't just arbitrarily decide they will or won't shut down.

No, if one single levee fails the planet is going to explode.

that's a loaded question; there are any number of possible scenarios where they wouldn't have enough time, and any number of other scenarios where they would.

Why are you lying to her?  There's no way, in any scenario, that they could take the reactor offline before a catastrophe strikes.  WE'RE ALL DOOMED!!!!!

as a resident of Nebraska, i humbly offer to throw myself into the reactor, in an effort to stop the impending doom of all that we hold dear.

Um, when the plan was developed in the first place, the assumption was that the procedures were for safety, not simply to have a plan.  The reaction time is part of the Human Factors part of the analysis.  It's pretty cut and dried.

Cool!  A human sacrifice!

I see that Chicken Little has been conspicuously absent since yesterday, but I came across this gem last night:

“If we would be required by our procedures to shutdown the reactor if water reached the 902 feet above sea level (45.5 on the Brownville river gauge) we would do a shutdown. More than likely we would do a shutdown over a period of 4 to 10 hours, but could shut the reactor down within three seconds. We prefer to slowly go down to avoid errors. No melt down would occur because the safety systems would be operating with power from off-site sources that would run the pumps and other equipment necessary to keep the reactor and spent fuel storage facility with cooling water. The shutdown would be similar to the same types of actions taken when we go into a refueling outage and we have gone through more than 26 refueling outages. In the event we would lose off-site power, we have three diesel generators available to operate the safety systems. There is already diesel fuel available for 20 days of continuous operation (diesel; generators are tested monthly and we added the third backup system during the last refueling outage) plus we have brought in several tankers filled with diesel fuel and have alerted our fuel supplier to need of additional fuel if needed. We also have available backup sources of power with the use of batteries that can operate 4-8 hours with a portable diesel generator available to recharge those batteries.

We now return you to your regular ignorance-fueled fear mongering.
