being a newcomer to ropework, and only having had cursory experience, I wonder what material would be best for the beginner, and if certain threads, or weaves, or whatever the phrase may be, might be better suited for specific 'work' as it were?

Which thread/chord would best for tight tieing/bondage?
Would that need to be coarse thread that would bind well against itself?
Or should it be softer to save the skin from chafe/burn, relying on knots or tension built up in another manner?

I've noticed some glorious soft and silken threads woven (?) into ropes which are a glory to feel as they are...  but do they work as a binding rope?

Im just after a little info in general.

Thanks in advance.

I found being tied up with small nylon chord it cut into my skin. I liked being tied with silk, and hemp rope felt better than nylon to me, but other people will differ.

a lot of people recommend hemp rope for any skill level -- really, even as a beginner, if you get good rope it makes things a lot easier to learn. of course hemp has a unique smell that some people like and others don't.
some people recommend cheap clothesline as a beginner material, too -- though i believe clothesline has a core, and with ropes with cores, sometimes the core has a different elasticity than the outer material, which can cause problems. at a demo, it was recommended to us to separate the outer material from the core material and just toss the core.

OK, I was just in this position myself only a few weeks ago. The best advice I got was something like this....

Sure, hemp is nice. It has enough of a texture that it grabs itself. It can be readily dyed. You can do something to it and make it softer if it didn't already come that way. But honestly, after searching for hemp rope (in a freakin harbor town no less) I got fed up and went to the home depot. One of the posters here gave me some simple advice. Drape it over your arm and yank it. If it hurts then it's bad. If not, it's good. $4.95 bought me 50 feet of really nice purple rope at the home depot. It is plenty good enough to get going. At that price point, if it didn't work for putting Carol in bondage then it would've been useful for other general purposes.

As I understand it, if you get deep into shibari then everything matters and has significance -- including the material chosen. But again, that's kind of the advanced series and doesn't really need to be important from day one.

I was personally very disappointed with the Knotty Boys reading material. It had pretty pictures but the technical writing was... well... worthless is a word that comes to mind.

Carol adds:
Ron is my hero on this one... but you have to offer to send your girl to give him a blow job before he'll help you out.

have you read Douglas Kent's Land and Air series? i've heard they're pretty fantastic, though i haven't had the chance to look at them personally.

Does that series have something to do with blowing Ron?

LOL - nope, didn't read but looking on amazon now.

Plenty of nylon woven stuff to hand at present.
That should serve a purpose for a while.

Pardon my meandering here but a little story that became one thing leading to another etc.

First, I always like woven poly rope because it's immensely strong yet highly flexible and of relatively soft fibre, so it won't itch or generally harm or distract my sub. And you can get it in assorted colours for general aesthetics etc.

Now to digress.... About a year ago I built a new box trailer and needed ropes for securing loads within it. Again, I also prefer woven poly rope for this task because of its strength and flexibility. So I went to the local hardware mega-mart and they had literally hundreds of rolls of 9mm woven poly rope.

Now, I'm presuming you're American (I'm Australian) but I'd imagine the US is no different to Oz when it comes to getting flooded with cheap Chinese products these days. And such was this rope - 30 metre lengths for $6. I was tempted to get extra for bondage duties but decided I had ample supplies and just bought 2 rolls for the trailer. But when it came to cutting it into assorted utility lengths, I noticed it had only a woven cover over a solid inner core of some kind of synthetic material. When I squeezed it between my fingers, it was possible to squash it to half whereas with poper woven poly, you can squash it maybe 10%. And it had some elastic qualities which woven poly doesn't.

After about 5 seconds of consideration, I decided this wasn't any good at all for safely fixing heavy loads securely in a car trailer. BUT....! This rope is sooooo soft...! So I got all the trailer rope I needed from my bondage stock and went back and bought a dozen more rolls of assorted (vivid) colours as well as some similar 6mm rope that was also available. Win/win.

Now rope with elastic qualities isn't ideal for safely tying someone up, so it's not necessarily ideal for beginners. So avoid pulling such rope too tight as you wrap it around limbs and maybe add an extra wrap to compensate. I have 3 personal rules of rope bondage and rope with elastic qualities can mess with the first two - NO chance of escape (Rule #1) vs safety and comfort (Rule #2).

Soooo, got Chinese at the hardware?

Focus.

No worries.... I'm waaaay too lazy to check profiles for nationality (esp when you're entirely the wrong gender) so I just assume 'American' first.
