Payola is a radio term for a DJ or station being paid to play certain songs without telling the listeners that the station or DJ is getting paid to play that song. It is illegal. What the right wing hate jocks are doing isn't illegal but it sure looks a lot like payola to me.

It looks a lot like "Advertising" to me. Oh, wait, it IS advertising.

You do realize that in payola no one said they were getting paid to play, right?

another massive KD fail.

Before politico investigated no one was saying they were getting paid. As usual epic fail by wilbur.

Yeah, youre right. Everyone should assume advertising was free. The mind boggles.

Evidently, common sense... isn't.

1)  Definition of Payola:  "The practice of bribing someone to use their influence or position to promote a particular product or interest."  Uh Oh... doesn't fit what the OP is alleging. How shocking!!!

2)  OOOOOH NOOOOOOOOOZE... seems NPR... GASP... does the SAME thing?!!  From NPR's website:

"NPR sponsors receive on-air acknowledgement for their financial support via ten second announcements that are broadcast during NPR programs. Online sponsorship is also available. Sponsorship packages and commitment levels vary, and they can be customized. Learn how NPR can help your company effectively communicate its brand message to an audience..."

OMFG... the absolute horror!!!

DomKen -> RE: Rigth wing payola (6/23/2011 8:04:10 PM)

This wasn't paid for commercials! This was promoting the organizations PoV and people without acknowledging they were getting paid for it.

pahunkboy -> RE: Rigth wing payola (6/23/2011 8:11:59 PM)

Ya know payola was a big scandal.    I mention this alot in the radio station I am involved with.... that our top 40 is not stacked.  It took a while to work it out- but we did... and listenership is UP.

1)  They are "paid for" SPONSORSHIPS -- i.e., a form of... (drum roll)... ADVERTISING!!!

2)  PSSST... guess what a SPONSORSHIP does... (drum roll)... it "promotes the organization's POV".  Once again, from NPR's website:

"NPR sponsors receive on-air acknowledgement for their financial support via ten second announcements that are broadcast during NPR programs. Online sponsorship is also available. Sponsorship packages and commitment levels vary, and they can be customized. Learn how NPR can help your company effectively communicate its brand message to an audience..."

Exactly what do you think "communicate its brand message to an audience" means?!!  Do we really need to queue up the Jeopardy music for this simple concept?!!

3)  No "acknowledgement" (as you seem to think) needs to be done... their "acknowledgement" for their support comes by way of... (drum roll)... mentioning the sponsor during the broadcast -- that's how the sponsor is "acknowledged" for their "financial support".

DomKen -> RE: Rigth wing payola (6/23/2011 8:20:13 PM)

The fact is thes organizations were never described as sponsors of the show. The hate jocks simply talked up the organizations and the organizations' talking heads. This is precisely not what NPR does when it broadcasts a 10 second spot saying "Todays All Things Considered is brought to you by xxxxxx."

DarkSteven -> RE: Rigth wing payola (6/23/2011 8:21:23 PM)

It's not payola.  That was bribing to play certain songs.

It's not quite advertising, either.  Closer to product placement in some cases.  But "buying" editorials is clearly unethical if not illegal.

Again, here's the definition of "Payola"...

"The practice of bribing someone to use their influence or position to promote a particular product or interest.

Soooooo... got any actual proof of someone (i.e., an individual) being bribed, as opposed to mere advertising (by way of a sponsorship) that's paid to the broadcast company (i.e., advertising) to promote said sponsor???

pahunkboy -> RE: Rigth wing payola (6/23/2011 8:26:16 PM)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Payola  yeah the term was a music pay for play.

Pssst... for the second time now... they don't have to be.

Yes it is... sponsorships are a form of "advertising".

No "buying" of editorials has taken place.

pahunkboy -> RE: Rigth wing payola (6/23/2011 8:36:53 PM)

Why this crap about NPR?  No one listens to that broken down station.  It is out of fashion- so 90s like.

To demonstrate NPR (Left-leaning radio) also offers "sponsorship" packages (advertising), just as the networks that carry the shows the OP is all in a huff about do.

That's not true... NPR has a very loyal and devoted listenership -- and it's not a "station", it's a Radio Network.

Nobody said they had to be although ethically the source of money and bias should be revealed.

Bullshit. NPR publicly tells its listeners exactly who is payig money to the station and no money goes directly to hosts.

anytime I pop in there they are fund raising or telling us about some sponsor-   there are so many sponsor announcements that it may as well be talk radio.

Actually, YOU did... but if you've backed off on that false premise, then you no longer have a basis for your position.
