Well there's no denying that Christian reconstructionists and Muslim fundies share similar goals to some extent - they're both very much uncomfortable with erotic expression in any form, and particularly feminine eroticism - remember Ashcroft had a statue of Justice draped (she is normally depicted with one, or both breasts bared).
i.e., certain things, like public modesty (hijab) and erotica/pornography (Muslim aniconism) are shared, and of no small political interest - and politics, as we know, makes strange bedfellows.
It does require some effort to maintain a secular democratic state in the face of religious fanaticism and neurosis, which has simply been around too long to just go away, and in that conflict, exaggeration is commonly employed as a weapon.
