Sometimes I really hate our legal system. According to WIBW news, a disabled war vetern who lost both legs was charged with stalking members of the Westboro Baptist Church. The Topeka Kansas church is known for protesting at funerals with hateful signs like "thank God for dead soldiers" "God hates you" "God hates fags", etc.

These church members get away with harassing the mourning families of dead soldiers on a regular basis, but an understandably offended war vetern gets charged with stalking them. What can the poor guy do to them? He's in a wheelchair. What happens if some radical religious group shows up at ground zero carrying we love Al Queda signs and someone gets offended? Will they get charged with stalking too?

As despicable as Westboro may be, I don't recall any mention of them driving around with guns and ammo:

http://www.kansas.com/2010/12/04/1617714/vet-now-faces-felony-conspiracy.html

...The charge accuses Army veteran Ryan Newell of engaging in a conspiracy in which firearms were obtained and put in his vehicle and taken to a place where church members were located.

Mid-morning Tuesday, detectives arrested Newell. He was backed into a parking spot outside Wichita City Hall with guns and ammunition in his SUV while five Westboro church members met inside with Wichita police officials to discuss protest-safety concerns, sources have said.

The felony charge alleges that there was a conspiracy in which Newell entered into an agreement with another person.

Sadly, part of the benefit of a legal system like yours is that it supposedly protects everybody from being stalked, even shits like Phelps and his crowd of trolls.
When it stops doing that, you're in trouble, however undeserving the twat whose being stalked might be.

Definitely an upsetting case, but what else can you say?

I have to guess that you are talking about this months old case....

I would say he got lucky, getting only probation for lesser charges.

On Nov. 30, Sedgwick County sheriff's detectives arrested Newell after his vehicle was found backed into a parking place outside Wichita City Hall while five Westboro Baptist Church members met inside with police officials about security concerns at the church's protests. He had a high-powered rifle, two handguns and more than 90 rounds of ammunition, sources have said.

I absolutely DESPISE those fuckers!!!  And I do think our legal system has failed with regard to this group.  Quite simply, there's a line where one person's (or group's) civil liberties to invade another's, that the law should recognize this... yet it doesn't.
